Yea, I mean the Bombshell ones in particular I know a LOT of people have had break on them, some in not-fun ways.

I race on aluminium Reach forks on my 20" now, steel on my cruiser.

Nice. Yeah there's a lot of variety to all the bikes I have. Particularly the hemis alone. I have a few with sinisters on them. various carbon forks on some. Then I have another one with a full TNT front end with their chromoly forks. I don't really race or anything so None of them get beat on.

What's the ideal gear ratio for the mid-schools and modern race bmx bikes?
I'm not a fan of the micro-drive "looks" of my bmx but at 28/9 it seems to run fine cruising around the neighbourhood.
Nice bikes Dan.....

29/9 is a really hard gear. Most race bikes are at 44:16 or within a couple of teeth of that.

According to the Gear Inch calculator....
My 28/9 bmx is running at ~51GI which doesn't feel too bad for booting around the neighbourhood.
Both my Single Speeds are running 42/16 on 700/25's at ~69GI. I ride them mostly on flat paved roads keeping a steady cadence.

I like the look of the 44/16 combo on the Race bmx bikes but the GI is very similar to my current 28/9 so not sure if I'm gaining anything but aesthetics......or am I missing something?

Most of my 20s are running 44/16. Couple of them have 42/15. My new school bikes run the 25/9 and 28/10. My cruisers are running 41/18 and 36/16

28/9 is a bigger gear than 44/16, not sure where you're getting the numbers - 25/9 should be roughly the same as 44/16 (actually slightly harder) so the 28/9 is a much bigger gear. Almost equivalent to 50/16

The actual bigger-sized chainrings and sprockets are better for the big power of gate starts and slightly less friction losses in the drivetrain. The small rings and "drivers" are to create more clearance for tricks.

Viich....you're correct. 28/9=58GI, 44/16=51GI. I re-entered the numbers in Sheldon Brown's website. I should listen to my wife and get a pair of reading glasses
Your info in the second part makes a lot of sense.

Oh, it would be sweet to race that red Fatboy cruiser for a day.

Nice build.
