Mid school build.
Hi.
my son has out grown his current bike. I came cross a 2006 GT Power series in almost brand new complete condition. I bought it thinking it would be fun to build and he can race it.
I don’t want to spend a huge amount of money on it.
im looking for recommendations first moderately priced rims and hubs that will weigh less and perform better than the stock ones.
any build suggestions would be appreciated!
just want to make it a bit light and a bit faster!
thanks!

I would leave it as is and ride it as is unless there is an issue. Replace only parts that are worn out and ride it. It was a $300 bike new and new wheels are likely to cost that amount. It is a fine enough bike and probably just needs a tune up and some lubrication and grease and should be good to go.
The bars are heavy hi-ten steel and I believe the fork is as well leading to a heavier bike just FYI.
