Profile Deluxe vs. Madera Protacool

I need new cranks since mine weight about five pounds. I'm looking at the profile deluxes but the description under maderas say that they're made by profile and they have the same details so I was wondering if it is worth the extra $30 to get the deluxes.

sbcdestroy 12-16-06 06:34 PM

no, they are the same thing...

look at Odyssey 41 thermals too, much stronger crank with a better warranty.

I wouldn't get the thermals because the arms come loose pretty often.

How would you know? You have them?

The Madera cranks are made by profile but are a bit rounder, if you will than the regular Profiles. I would just get a nice set of Profiles with the hop up kit if i were you.

Wombolts look nice as well.

Chris Gabriel 12-16-06 08:58 PM

Yeah I think I'm just going to get the profiles becasue I might be getting a good deal on a frame so I want some money to spend on that.

Nope... but that's what people say about them... good cranks but one of the arms comes loose like after every session.

sbcdestroy 12-17-06 03:07 AM

so carry around an allen wrench, I dont mind giving them a quick turn before i ride.

wethepeople 12-17-06 03:29 AM

I'm getting a pair of 41 thermals after christmas, I'm pretty stoked about it.

Fianlly a good pair of cranks.

Profiles can do that too, but you can always just check them before you leave your house to go ride, or carry a small allen wrench like sbc said...

My Primo cranks have been pretty good but i wouldnt recommend them. They make a creaking sound because they are hollow but yet nothing is wrong with them. And when i do tables and my feet shift sideways the Primo cranks have this like circular raise sort of the by the pedal bosses that hurts my feet when land with them sideways.

Then you should try to land straight with them.

Haha, easier said then done. Especially when you are doing them so clicked they are on your back! Not that i can.

I don't even want to try that trick because I can see myself unable to get out of it and then landing straight on my leg and rebreaking it.

I think that the madera cranks are only cheaper becuase they are made in taiwan.

What would be better...Eastern Pro or maderas? Or any other suggestions of cranks under 150

Maderas by far. Maderas = Profile. Eastern = Eastern
Profile > Eastern

eightdip 12-22-06 03:59 PM

Most Brands > Eastern. In my opinion

Agreed.

FlyBikes21 12-22-06 09:39 PM

well I agree with FitRider & eightdip but ive heard great thing about the new fly cranks I suggest you get those.
Note: Way over priced though

If I got cranks I would get the Flys. Newsflash, good things that are light and strong tend to be expensive. Currently, they are the lightest bmx branded cranks on the market. Hence why they are expensive.

wethepeople 12-23-06 12:36 AM

And hence why i'm getting them.

Plus there are still cranks that cost more.

premiumbmx2005 12-23-06 12:08 PM

i dont like the 22mm spindle, though. especially since i have a euro bb.

eightdip 12-24-06 07:25 AM

I've never had any problems with any of my cranks except for some magna 1 peice cranks which i bent doing stair sets (how cool was I). Then again, i've never had euro bb

VERY wrong, plus they come loose and only cover the arms with the xwarranty. I spoke to Nuno at ODY 3 weeks ago and they are about to stop making them now that the Wombolts are out. Profile offers a LIFETIME warranty onthe full crankset. And a 3month on the bearings, and they will be the last set of cranks you ever need.

As far as being the same...wrong agian. The Prots. are made by Profile but offer no warranty.

Now if you want good cranks under 150...look at Stolen(Dans has limited colors right now).

You are very wrong. The cranks are very strong, although the arms do come loose quite often. I doubt they will stop making them anytime soon. The thermals could be the last set of cranks you ever need.

No kidding, he didn't mean that literally.

If you take care of the cranks and carry an alen wrench with you and keep them tight they are fine.

Better call Ody...

I'm good friends with most of the guys up their and the 41thermals are being discountinued soon. Plus, compared to Fly, Wombolts and Profiles they are on the heavy side.

I've rode BMX for 27yrs. I have alot of guys who work for compines, own compines or ride for them that I speak to alot. At Interbike, they said flat out that Wombolts will be REPLACEING 41 Thermals.

Want Nuno's number? I'm not BSing you...I'm trying to help the guy not get cranks that won't be made shortly if he messes them up. ANYONE remember RNC? That warranty is useless seeing they went out of the BMX side of the industry.

I don't need to call Odyssey. Regardless, if they will be discontinued or not, they are still nice cranks. If they are going to be discontinued then you could just buy them at a discount price.

premiumbmx2005 12-29-06 02:07 PM

um, im pretty sure 41 thermals are LIGHTER than profiles.

edit: profiles are only .5 ounces ligher

FitRider 921 12-29-06 02:10 PM

True story. Depending on which profile cranks you get. If you just get the normal ones, then the 41 thermals are lighter.

Well, really it depends on set up. I know afew guys running TI spindles on Primos and they are just slightly lighter than Profiles with a cromo spindle.

It is all in the spindle type, and pedals.
