it sounds like you're asking for something different.... you need to maintain them and pack them good and water them a bit

Use only the B-horizon clay soils, preferably reddish, rich in kaolinite, and with a total lack of carbonate buildup.
And, no, I'm not joking.

No.
You're going to need a Munsell Soil Guide, a squeeze-bottle filled with water, and a shovel, preferably a military-grade E-tool.

You don't ask questions to a man educated in soils; no, you simply follow the instructions given to you.

So, your saying top soil won't work?
Take a look at the pics i posted of the trails in Katy, TX(outside Houston). We 1st used a nice closed apliance store to get filler to get the jumps larger without holes every 2ft. Then some nice clay, and topped it with nice black soil.
Next was a good watering before they had the lips carved and alot of packing. Then we carved the lips and lightly watered them agian. Now, we only need to water them every 3-5 days and they are like concrete.
Use what you have. If you live near water, you can get ahold of alot of good clay to use as a cement type cover over stuff like sand. Or to build the whole jump.
It dosen't take clay it takes alot of time and energy to get them built and shaped. Then just take care of them. Fix them when needed and your good to go. Prime example is POSH, 9th Street, AREA 51(not the park)...not 1 use all (9th Street in particular)clay. And all where built with shovels, rakes , pick axes and hoes (

).jack of one or two trades
And don't use logs or anything like that as filler in the jumps... I've seen too many in my area die after a year or two because they cave in.

I remember the lovely adobe clay we had at home in San Jose. That would be the Cambrian Park area, right next to Union Middle School.Originally Posted by CMcMahon

If I had been into BMX then, I think we would have had some most satisfactory trails from that soil. We didn't have to worry about the military-grade E-tool as the graders and 'dozers did a more than satisfactory job of compacting it

I wasn't honestly being serious. I was trying to help the guy who asked...but I doubt he read the whole thing so I typed it all for no reason really.

Total of 5yrs about now to get them to how they look in the pic. LOTS of days of nothing but digging 8hrs or so straight. But, well worth it.

Packing jumps isn't rocket science kido. All you gotta do is pack with your feet, then a nice flathead shovel to smooth it all out. And before you hit the jump roll up it slow to make sure your packed it enough. Some people like to use tampers, i just like beating my lips with a good Craftsman flathead shovel. (They have warranties on their shovels which i need because i break ever trail building tool...ask mude...)

When I'm uncrippled I might make some dirtjumps just for myself in some secret location to play around with to learn some stuffs. I really want to learn some turndowns and barspins. Those are the tricks I'm going to start with when I can finally ride again.
