5 speed bmx

I've managed to come across a few bmx frames, and I thought of trying to jimmy my 5 speed freewheel & derailleur onto one of them. Anyone ever done this before?

Bikes: bmx

i dont think the cluster and wheel will fit between the dropouts. and even if it does the derailiurer will be almost touching the ground and you will have to spend big money gettting a 5speed hub onto a decent. you would also have to space your axles unless you can find an old bmx with 10mm axles.

good luck. let me know how it goes.

I bet you could. I don't know why you'd want to, but i think this hub from Profile would do the trick for ya:
https://profileracing.com/products_home.php?productid=13

I wouldn't run pegs with it though since it's 3/8"...

People always ran pegs on 3/8ths... it's not that terrible, but it isn't so great either. 3/8ths for the front isn't too bad, especially if you are light.

I'm not sure why I want to do this either, but I have the week off from work, and plenty of free time.

I've done this recently, 'cept I used a Nexus hub . . .

24" Redline Signature Cruiser
24" x 2.5" Maxxis Hookworms (great by the way)
Nexus Inter-4 rear hub with grip shifter

The hub came off a 4-speed Electra Hawaii Cruiser I found on Craigslist for $20. I had the original wheel rebuilt with the hub and stainless spokes. It has a coaster brake, now I need a front brake.

It's about halfway down. It's a red/white Redline with apehangers. I'm still working on dialing it in. The seat height is just right, I've finally worked out the seat position, the apehangers may go. I actually just put cork tape on them but they are a bit too high. I just picked up some taller bmx handlebars and see how those work out.

It's my commuter, I just needed something that could handle my clyde frame. This bike is the first step in no longer being a clyde. I've got about 80 lbs to go.

I'll tell you what though, that thing is a blast to ride!

I love and hate that bike at the same time. Hate it because it's a terrible thing to do to ANY BMX bike.
Love it because it says "SCREW what anyone thinks! I'm doing what I want!"
Keep riding man!

I would like that bike if it didn't look so messed up. That is such a good bike...even though it's older. I would take it. With some new parts and stuff it'd be even better.

the spacing will not work bmx is 110mm road is 130mm mtb is 135mm
if you can some how find an old mongoose 5-speed that would be best

I don't really see what is wrong with my post please enlighten me it appears no one has mentioned the difference in spacing when a derrailer and a multispeed fw are involved I simply stated that the old school mongoose 5 speeds were set up for that you could easily fit a sa 3spd, 5spd or even a nexus in it sram what ever but a multispeed fw or freehub wouldn't work you would probably crack the brake bridge and chainstay stiffener trying to stretch it

I think its been pretty much concluded that he needs a nexus hub, or something similar.
