I ride mostly street. when I ride dirt I use a modified Bmx with longer seatpost and stem.It is easier to put in the van.l was in Va for 18 monthsin the Norfolk Va beach area and used bicycles as my transport and rec no car ,it was tough but doable. Sometimes I would ride the bus. The furthest I rode while there was 40 miles (18 km) round trip. James

Too old to ride a BMX!
But I'm trying to restore my old school 1981 4130 cromoly Redline MX II (last of the MX II's made in USA). If anyone knows an easy way to strip off powdercoat paint, I'd sure like to know. Sanding seems to be the only thing that works. |
you are NEVER to old to BMX unless ya are like all wrinckled and boring grandad, lol

The bike I built for my son that he's getting for X-mas:
Frame: '99 Schwinn Andrew Faris Powerflow flat (sick frame, no wonder Schwinn went Chapter 11) Forks: Odyssey Thermals 14mm (dirt? has 990 bosses) Bars: Schwinn XS 7". Headset: FSA Pig Stem: Primo Casket (too heavy - my mistake) Cranks: Profile SS 175mm Bottom Bracket: Profile Evolution Spindle: Profile Ti ($80??? I must be nuts) Pedals: Odyssey (too heavy) Sprocket: FBM 26T w/bash guard Front Wheel: Cheezey Haro 14mm (but have nice Sun BFR) Rear Rim: Araya RBJ1 Hikimo (sweet) Rear Hub: XS 4x4 (it'll do) Rear Cog: Shimano 11T (very close fit!) Seatpost: Matt Hoffman (I think - internally fluted 4130) Seat: S & M Logo grey (too flashy? cheap Chineese junk) Clamp: Profile Brake Lever: Odyssey Modulever Cable: Odyssey w/London Mod Detangler: Gyro2 Brake: Odyssey Evolver in back Pads: Odyssey 1x4 Grips: ODI Rouge w/locks Front Tire: Odyssey Overbite Rear Tire: Odyssey Overbite Chain: Z510HX It has a front brake for now: Hombre Siesta. He can take it off if he wants for dirt. I want him to leave it on for street. He's young yet (7) & probably won't appreciate this thing for a while if ever. This bike is built to go any way he decides. It won't take much to dial in to any discipline he migrates to. I still have no idea why I built this thing. Even with Ebay & a friend with a shop, I had to spend over $1400. Just the stinking BB was over 4bills with another yard & a half hanging off it. The frame originally retailed in '99 for $850 with a Schwinn 4130 fork & XS stem. I got it used as an unbuilt dust collector from a former Haro Flatland Team rider for $80 or this wouldn't have been possible at all. Living out my own adolescent BMX fantasy here I think. My own bikes are a Trek 8000 & a Specialized HardRock. Both hardtail MTB's. The usual Shimano upgrades. Both do more for less! |
I thought the Andrew Faris frame was the 36-24-26?
|
He had 2 frames. The 36-24-36 was the "Pepto Bismol Pink" frame. The Powerflow was the exact same geometry in black powder coat. Both had the sick CNC'ed chainstay yoke. Also the pierced top tube that remains a Schwinn feature to this day. They had 100 of each color made. Selected Schwinn dealers were "stuck" with the frames the team didn't use.
I have heard that Schwinn had these made in California by Buddy Carrol (sp?) who builds circle track motorcycle frames. Given the fact this frame never got all it's decals, I can't fathom who might have owned it before the guy I got it from. |
