Bikes: a lowrider BMX, a mountain bike, a faired recumbent, and a loaded touring bike

FOUND: Raleigh BMX

I found a Raleigh BMX bike last week. Someone pointed it out to me actually. It was in a dumpster at the RR Station.

It is purple and grey, it has disk covers on the wheels. And it has caliper brakes. I would guess the bike is about 20 tears old. The model name is Reflex (not to be confused with the 250 cc Honda scooter).

The serial number is 6IR 184 MO

But there is nothing wrong with it. The brakes work and the tyres are holding air.

Why would anyone chuck a good bicycle in a dumpster?

I'd rock that, with a new paint job.

Thank You East Hill- THAT is the Exact same bike.
The one I found still has plastic disk spoke covers (which were never very popular, but I like them), and still has white rubber tyres (tires).

Like I said, it was found in a dumpster, so I don't think it was stolen.

I agree with what fuzzbox said, but he's going to have to come and pick it up.
Or Whoever wants it, they are going to have to come and pick it up.

I am at the Library now, to print a picture from that link you gave me. (My Mother's printer ran out of black ink).

There is some grey spraypaint on this bike, but it must be overspray from another bike. Maybe the bike was stolen, and someone was trying to mask out the name of the bike.

I might take this bike to a thrift store and donate it. There is a thrift store in Uniondale, Long island (home of the NY islanders).

I don't want to customise this bike on account of the caliper brakes. It would be hard to sell. I would at least need a bike with Vee brakes, and even then, people want disk brakes these days.

Uhhhh, shipping? I haven't mailed anything in years. Everything goes by email.

I put up an ad on the bulletin board at the local supermarket that says $15.00

I hope to sell it quick with no hassle.

https://www.bmxmuseum.com/bikes/raleigh/8069

I stole the picture from this ad (printed it) to make the ad for the bulletin board.
(cheaper than photographing it myself).

The last time I sold a bike, I met all kinds of loonies, who wanted me to take parts off, and sell them a bare frame at a discount.

I haven't done any work on this Raleigh, except wiping it with Windex and a paper towel.

--------
So fuzzbox where do you live, Arizona?

I just took the plastic wheel disks off the Raleigh Reflex.
I want them for myself.
The picture East Hill posted shows the bike w/o the disks, and most people don't like them, they say they can't control the bike in a cross wind.

East Hill,
Did you know there is a village about two and a half miles from here called East Hills?
Goto Google maps and look up "East Hills, NY". I'm directly North, 2 1/2 miles.

No, but out of curiosity; I Googled his name, and he apparently is a photographer and/or a botanist.

I bought a ten ounce bottle of nail polish remover, which contains acetone, and I was removing spraypaint from the Raleigh.

I found a registration sticker under the paint!

The bike was registered with Chataqua institution, a resort in New York State.

So I phoned, left a message, and emailed them to see if they can find the original owner of this bike.

The registration is # 880532.

So I have to put the sale on hold until I confirm this bike was not stolen.

Really? How cool! Must be a bike they have to allow people to move about the campus.

No, It's their policy to have visitors register their bikes while on campus:

https://tickets.ciweb.org/?select=bicycles

https://www.ciweb.org

I haven't got an answer from them yet, but something's changed since yesterday. Yesterday they had the 2007 prices online, today it's been updated to 2008.

Well, I got an Email from the Chautauqua people, as follows:
[quote]
Dear Mr. D______,
Thank you for the consideration you have shown regarding the bike you found, it was very thoughtful of you to research it as thoroughly as you did. I checked with our Chief of Police, who searched through his records and he came to the conclusion that you should keep the bike! Enjoy!

Laurie

Chautauqua Box Office
PO Box 28
Chautauqua, NY 14722 [end quote]

So, it looks like the bike is mine now, in the clear!
Thanks East Hill, for helping with the research.

I have gotten more of the black spray paint off, by using acetone based nail polish remover, and an old toothbrush.
