Anyone just cruise?
I currently ride a fixed gear road bike, my next project is a track bike, but I have been tempted to get a BMX for cruising around campus when I don't have class and just want to chill. Any of you do this and don't really bother with tricks? I never had a BMX as a kid and really want one, but how comfortable is just riding on em?
Hope I made some sense..it's late.. |
Not comfy at all to just cruise on.
Try a 24" BMX if you're into that. |
or old skool BMX.
|
Any suggestions for frames/bikes to look at? I would go and check some bikes in-store, but my local shop back home that was mostly BMX is re-modeling (or even closed now, I'm not sure..(

wethepeople just came out with a nice cruiser. i think subrosa did as well?
or less is more and you should just pick up something used on craigslist. after all, it's just going to be a bar bike, yah? if you can, borrow a bmx bike and/or cruiser for a while. a day or two on one will show you the way. |
dude i been riding bmx as a cruiser 4 about 25 years. you just gotta make sure your seat is right, get a longer tt and longer cranks and all will be chill. My giant is just a cruiser bike ...... good luck hope you get a bmx.

If you want a BMX bike for just cruisin, get a 24". It'll fit better & you won't look like an idiot with your bars in Chicago & your seat up higher than a flagpole.
Subrosa makes pretty much the most stylin' 24" in my opinion, but the WTP Unified is the better bike - all 4130 & better spec'd for the money. -Bill |
i bought a pink powerlite with tuff wheels at a garage sale for $4. thats my campus bike for the winter.
but i do agree im not as comfy as i'd like. im looking into building a 24" for a more enjoyable ride. on a side note i was thinking..If i build up a pretty sweet bmx cruiser and i dont do tricks like the OP am I gonna get one huge stink eye from the bmx community around here? just askin |
Just learn to wheelie & do a sweet skid and you'll be ok. ;)

In my defense, I didn't want to explain "Manual" to him.
And skids are always fun. I don't care what you say. At 37, I don't give a rat's 'backside' about everyone's respect, I'm just having fun. -Bill |
i know bmx terms and have friends that ride so im not that far behind
i was just wondering what the reaction would be if i showed up with a RAD freestyle bike and cant do ****. |
Well, it looks like everyone in BMX will loose a great deal of respect for you.
If you can live with that, go for it. -Bill |
My bad grammar senses are tingling.
|
Dang it! It's SO hard to be a smart-alec around grammar-nazi's when your grammar is questionable at best.
-Bill |
I apologize for the inconvenience.
|
Apology accepted.
|
Get a lowrider.
|
Even worse.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/photo019.jpg Yes, I just cruise. I never do any stunts. But I built my own "banana" seat , so I get enough leg extension. And this seat is a little wider than the banana seat you had on your Schwinn Stingray in the seventies. Here it is at night, in case you are wondering if the lights work: http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...photo_0016.jpg I obtained a Sturmey-Archer three speed hub with a coaster brake, and had it laced into a new 20 inch rim. The only mistake was I didn't open my mouth when the LBS dealer said the rim would be $60. I got a 20 inch rim, but it's narrow and has an aero profile. It's more like a recumbent rim, and I could not fit the aero disks. I use Maxxis Hookworm tires @ 110 psi. I only have been using this bike at night. I have blue lenses on the tail directionals, but I leave the lenses at home, on account they are only for Police and firemen. All the switches are mounted on the fairing, which is a Suzuki GS fairing from the early 1980's. I can not find any more motorcycle fairings, I called a dozen motorcycle dealers. Most of the switches are toggle switches, but two are clicking pushbuttons. The toggles are better because you can feel if it is off or on. The fiberglass is 3/16ths of an inch thick, nominal, or seven layers of 20 ounce glass. Please do not tell me you think it is too fragile- Fiberglass has a working strength of about 45,000 ponds per square inch. I have done thousands of miles on this bike and it has not broken, and I weigh 280 pounds. (I gotta lose weight). |
