Just picked up a used Redline mini racer yesterday for my 6 yo, and now I'm curious about it's history.

It's all chrome, with Araya rims... can't tell much else. Down tube is oval shaped. No decals. "GT" seat. I've been around bikes for years, but never any BMX stuff until now.

Anyone know what year it might have come from or what model it might be? Or, can you tell me what to look for on the bike that might pin it down?

I suspect this bike might be a bit older, as there is what appears to be a date stamp on the crank from 1998. That would place it as maybe an RL140? Except that the component mix does not match exactly.

This thing has no decals on it, but then those aren't that reliable anyway.

There is a serial number stamped on the bottom bracket. Is that something that can be decoded, like the VIN of a car?

Depends on the manufacturer and when it was manufactured. Some encode the year/month the frame was built into the serial number. Some even encode the model into it. But sometimes it is just literally a serial number and can't tell you anything you didn't already know.

I just spent 3 seconds googling for {redline serial cheat sheet} but nothing useful turned up, but if you hunt around a bit more you can probably find a guide to decoding it, if it's possible to decode.
