Using vintage parts?

Today i went out riding with some friends and one of them handed me a set of vintage vans sneaker style brake pads. He said he didnt hve any use for em so he gave them to me. would it be safe to use them? Or would they be better suited on a show only bike?

If they aren't crusty they should be fine. Brakes are brakes.
