Bike Recommendation for a 5 Year Old

I'm shopping for a bike for my soon to be 5 year old. This will be his first pedal bike but he's pretty good on the balance bike he's outgrown. He's 45" tall. I think 20" is the right size. A hand brake is a must as it is very hilly where we live. He'll mostly be riding on the street but may do some dirt as well. We live close to this place.

South Park BMX

Max budget is $300. Lower would be better because I don't think my wife will be too keen on spending that much on a bike for a 5 year old. I'm looking for something that will be durable and somewhat light weight. I don't see him doing any tricks any time soon. I just want something that will be a step up from what Wal-Mart has to offer.

I've found the 2014 Diamondback Venom for $240 on sale at REI. Opinions on this bike?

I second that. The price is right, and it will give him more options.

IMHO, a 20" wheeled bike is too tall, but you need to take him along and figure out which sized wheels fit best. You can find real bargains too used, as kids outgrow a bike every two years.

my kid was too short for the 16in giant animator I got her when she was 4 1/2. she is a tall kid. she may have grown into it by 5ish but being on a bike you're barely tall enough for isnt easy when you're learning.

agree with oddjob...def try out some sizes and look at craigslist bc used kids bikes are aplenty and 75% off retail at least
