Tour de Frio May 27, 2017
Join us May 27th for our first annual Tour de Frio as we hit the road for Harper! Tour de Frio is a cycling event taking place at Frio Cañon in Leakey, TX with a ride through the surrounding hill country. There are three routes with distances of 12 to 28 miles that wind through the scenic hill country. Start & Finish lines along with registration will take place in Homestead Park at Frio Cañon. Fried Chicken picnic to follow. This event supports the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation mission through Harper’s Heroes.
Harper DeWare is a precious little girl born March 25, 2016 to parents Amanda & Crawford DeWare. Harper was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis through her newborn screenings and Amanda and Crawford began the process of doing everything they can to give Harper a full, healthy and happy long life. “Harper’s Heroes” was created as a way to create support for the DeWare family and to raise money with the aim of finding a cure for cystic fibrosis, for Harper and the entire CF community.
WHAT IS CYSTIC FIBROSIS?
Cystic fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick, buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria leading to infections, extensive lung damage and eventually, respiratory failure. In the pancreas, the mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that allow the body to break down food and absorb vital nutrients.
