'84 Pinarello on CL
Guy is accepting offers. He's the original owner. Bike is all original minus handlebars, seat, and pedals. Decals look rough but the rest of the bike looks solid.
What do you think FMV is on this bike?
Thanks for any input!

Looking at E-Bay, some of the Campy equipped Pinarello Montello bikes seem to have asking prices around $1200 (not necessarily sale prices).
I would say that bike would sell for somewhere between $700 and $1100.
Talk to the seller to get a feel for the waters. Somewhere around $700 or $800 would be a fair first bid, then see where it goes from there.
If the seller is asking $2000... then just walk away, or leave your number if he should change his mind.

If the decals were in good shape I would suspect a fake. Thats how you tell if its a real Pinarello. I don't know what they did different but they always seem to be in rough shape.

An '84 with SLX? I thought that color scheme, which always reminded me of a rainbow trout for some reason, was usually an SL bike.
Whats up with that seat post? I can't tell if it is an extra long model or a regular CampI just stuffed in a smidgen. Is he willing to ship? I think on a CL silent auction in Boulder if he isn't willing to ship he'll have to take what he can get which may not be much over the $700+/- already stated.
Any idea on the maintenance status? does it need an overhaul? chain? cassette?

From the pictures it's a genuine Pinarello with SLX tubing in better than usual condition. Certainly worth $700, IMO. Boulder is likely to be a good market for the seller. Run, don't walk.

That paint scheme, known as Italian Ice, was used on a number of Pinarello models, including those with SLX and Cromor tubesets.

I suspect one day we'll discover T-Mar is actually Penelope from Criminal minds and just has a huge computer and super fast internet connection!
But seriously his knowledge and reference library is amazing

The seller is on his way over to my place. It's an hour and a half drive so I won't count my eggs before they hatch but he's including an extra set of NOS Campagnolo wheels with dura ace hubs in the deal. We've agreed on $900. Thinks he might have the original saddle and handlebars as well which would be awesome but he had to look for them so again not counting on that yet. I spoke to him on the phone and he is 100% the original owner and had this bike custom made for him in early '85 by Wheat Ridge Cyclery about 15 minutes from downtown Denver. Mechanical it seems all sound and it's pretty evident from my conversation that this guy knows more about bikes than I do. Really excited to get my hands on it! Will keep you all posted and follow up with some pics if I end up with it.

Hey Everyone,
Wanted to update you about the Pinarello. The seller and I were able to get the deal done last night! Easily the most i've ever spent on a C&V bike but been looking to get into the Italian stuff for awhile and thought this was as good a time as any. Once I got on the bike and took it for a test ride it was evident pretty quickly how nice of a ride it was.
As far as maintenance goes, I'm gonna redo the brake cables and that's it. They just seem a bit dry. The bike shifts flawlessly and the chain seems almost brand new.
I'm also waiting to hear from the seller in regards to the original bars and saddle. He didn't have time last night to look through his workshop but said if he finds them then they're mine. Would love to get my hands on those bars as the Scott Dropbars aren't doing it for me on this vintage Italian Stallion.
I am really blown away at how clean the bike is. The hubs look like they're brand new. It's pretty remarkable.
The one question I have for all of you, is what to do with the decals. As mentioned by @sloar, it seems every 'real' Pinarello has absolutely terrible decals. I'm almost leaning towards clear coating them or something to preserve them as they are now instead of replacing them completely. What are your thoughts?
Again, thanks to everyone for the input. It's been an exciting 24 hours!

I would replace them, the bikes in to nice of shape to leave those on. The bad thing is once you remove the old decals you will be able to see where they were. So placement of the new decals are very important. Good luck and beautiful bike, congrats

I suggest leaving the original decals as-is for a few months and then decide if you want to replace them. My Pinarello is like yours, an unusually good overall example. I was tempted to remove and replace the decals since the rest of the bike was in near-new condition. However, I've become comfortable with the decals as-is and will probably wait until I do a full tear down of the bike before removing the original decals. Perfection is over-rated, authentic is sufficient.

Congratulations! Welcome to Pinarello Montello ownership!
I recently acquired mine, also in close to mint condition...... except, of course, for the decals on it.
Here's the link to my recent post on the C&V forum regarding my current rebuild/tune up on my Montello, which I am hoping to complete this holiday weekend.

I just received a replacement decal set from Velocals yesterday......now I have to decide whether to leave the old decals on or restore the bike with the Velocals.......

Now that we have better pictures, I strongly suspect that the frame is 2-3 years newer than claimed. The 1985 did not have a pump peg. Also, it has the Pinarello branded dropouts with the rearward positioned cable stop. These do not appear in the 1987 literature but do in 1989 (you can't tell in the 1988 pics). However, since the palmares decal does not indicate the 1988 TDF victory, we know it's not a 1989. Consequently, the evidence is pointing towards a 1988 model and possibly a 1987, if the dropouts were changed after the catalogue release.
I can't quite read the date codes on the brakes. It certainly would be interesting to know what they are. If I'm correct about the dating this is also about the time when the name for the colour scheme was "Spumoni".
Regarding the decals, Pinarello had the worst, and they never learned. I have a 2001 Prince that I bought NOS in 2003 and they were flaking when I bought it. They continued to flake, while it was just hanging, waiting for the components to perform the build. Personally, I'd put in the rest of the season on the bicycle before I made a decision on whether to clear coat or replace the decals.
Regardless, congratulations on your new acquisition. Enjoy.

About the only thing that I have in common with Garcia are large thighs, but mine are pure muscle from decades of competition.

I also took a picture of what I think are the date codes on the brakes. I was running out of the house and just took a pic of the first number I saw. Not sure if they indicate date or model?
I'm still in contact with the seller and he is gonna look for the original bill of sale which would certainly help clear things up. I'll let you know if I get any more info from him either way!
Thanks much!

That's a very nice score! I paid $600 for my Montello as a frame, fork and headset with no paint and didn't feel like I got a bad deal.
I agree with those who have recommended keeping the original decals. Clear coating over them isn't a terrible idea, but I'd be worried that it would detract from the quality of the overall appearance. Replacements are a gamble because the odds of matching the original size and shape perfect are kind of low and that bike is old enough that you'll probably have ghosting if you remove these decals. Also, replacement decals tend to look thick if you get the kind that don't require a top clearcoat. For instance, I have an '84-ish Gran Turismo with what I'm pretty sure are replacement decals. Here's what they look like:
That's not terrible. It looks good from 5 feet away, but up close you're like "Oh, OK...."
Plus, non-peeling decals on a vintage Pinarello is like Japanese components on a vintage Pinarello. Oh, wait....

I don't see the picture, but I'm guessing it's actually BB 294. The same S/N should be engraved on the steerer. I don't think that tells you anything though. FWIW, my Montello is NN 902. I have no certainty of what year it is beyond T-Mar having identified it as about an '87. My Gran Turismo, which is definitely an '84 plus or minus a year, is R 420 (single 'R').
