1983 specialized sequoia touring bike

I bought this new and had many happy long rides. It's been in storage since 1990, the 56cm frame is straight and true but has scrapes and chips on the paint, it has a pro built custom wheel set with Campy hubs and champion rims. Suntour Superb brakes. Triple Sugino crankset with half-step ratios.

In good shape overall but would benefit from a thorough going over.

What's it worth? I'm near Portland OR.

Thanks

+1, 500-900 sounds about right, depending on condition, especially in your area. Clean it up, take lots of good photos and set your starting price high. Be sure to mention you are the original owner. Good luck with it.

I have a pristine example listed on CL and have had it listed before, admittedly at premium price (though at the lower end of the estimates given here, but still at what I would consider anti-part-me-out pricing). It still has the original Superbe brake pads and brake lever hoods, and original tires in near NOS condition. This past listing, I had exactly ZERO inquiries about it. I'm near the NYC market, but too far for many city residents. Still, I didn't get a single response.

I think they may be more popular on the west coast for some reason. My next step is probably eBay...I've been avoiding it because I despise shipping for various reasons.

It's a "sports touring" bike. Lighter tubing, slightly more aggressive geometry, fewer braze-ons, and lighter, perhaps less durable, alloy components. My 60cm example weighs about 23.5 lbs complete.

+1 I think the pricing quoted above is optimistic. Very few $900 bikes out there.
Now $500 depending on condition, sure. Still then, a local sale could be difficult, although in Portland, maybe not.

How did yours get so light? Mine weighs in at about 27 lbs. Maybe with really light tires I could get it down to a bit under 26, but not any lower.

I'd think $500 would be at the upper end of the scale - but Grant Peterson did apparently really like this model which might raise its value for some.

Pictures from a short camping tour this spring - fortunately I wasn't planning on staying at the campground below.

Mine is all original. Looks like you've made some modifications?

Other than heavier tires currently I don't think anything would change the weight by much. The rear derailleur broke and was replaced by a Shimano model, pedals were replaced by SPDs, chain and freewheel have been replaced, and the front rim wore out. None of those changes made any significant weight increase and it was weighed without the rear rack or third bottle cage.

I would think in the 5-900 range may be realistic in a hot market. 56cm is a common size too. I recently sold a similar Miyata 1000 in that price range which I would consider a good comparable.
Post pictures!

I dunno. I weighed it on my hanging scale (properly calibrated as far as I can tell), and it displays 23.5.

Maybe the air in California is heavier? Or someone stuffed your frame full of lead shot?

I believe I always confuse it with the Expidition for some reason, but I never actually saw many of either.

it does sound like a nice bike and pics would be nice to see

Well, here's my CL ad with lots of pics: https://newjersey.craigslist.org/bik/2512130324.html

I post this purely for educational purposes and do not intend to solicit any sales. Like I said, I despise shipping.

Here are a few pics:

other folks here must have a good distribution system because I tried to sell a '85 Bottechia with Campy Record Brakes and misc. Shimano 600 running gear with Campy Tipo hubs and couldn't get anyone to look at it for $400, sold it for $250. Non-index road bikes don't sell for much unless it's in pristine condition.

How did you market it? A lot of getting full market value for a bike is the marketing effort put into it. It is actually pretty hard to get full market value. Takes a great ad, good timing, and a buyer in your area looking for that kind of bike at that time. And depending where you live, selling locally makes it a lot harder to get anywhere near full market value. Older bikes around here at the $300 price or higher sit with very little/no action. There is a sweet spot around $250 for vintage bikes. But that is here in Hooterville.

JYB's ad above is an example of superb marketing. And it still is not selling. In my area, touring bikes are not selling well this year at all. In the past, they enjoyed a hefty premium over similar era racing bikes. Just is not happening here this year.

So as a buyer, over $300 can be where a lot of deals are found. A crappy bike can sell quickly for $150, while something special at $350 sits. Modern bikes are a different story. Lots of buyers looking for used modern (STI) bikes.

Thanks for the info ...

I've got a much better idea now of the value. Man, the pics that JunkYardBike posted really show what a beautiful bike the Sequoia is and have inspired me to try a little cleanup/restoration on my own Sequoia. When I'm done I'll post pics in the "Forsale" forum.

Thanks again everyone for your posts, these vintage bikes are so beautiful it makes me happy that folks are still into them.

The trick to having nice pictures in your ad is to have them hosted at a site like photobucket.com and embed them in your add. The size of the pictures craigslist gives you is tiny. To sell a $600 bike you need big pictures.

+1. Hosting site and full sized pics are a must. The standard CL pics are terrible.
