Medici
A friend of mine @ work has been into cycling for years and has asked me to help her get rid of her and companions older Medicis. One has been recently upgraded to Campy 10spd and was previously owned by Mark Whitehead, size 55. The bike is in good condition etc. Second bike 52cm Pro Strada is all original Dura Ace and was owned by Gibby Hatton. This bike is in decent shape but per her report, needs a new saddle. I have yet to see the bikes, but hopefully will be seeing them this weekend. What prices should I tell her to expect? How much does the bikes previous owner impact the value? I did a little searching and came up with figures btwn $350-$500. Thoughts?

You mean Medici, right? From California?
That price range you quote is reasonable. The actual value will depend on three things: condition, condition, condition, and condition. (He said, in a John Madden-esque voice). ;-)

Mark (could have been Mark's older brother) and Gibby both were models in one of the Medici catalogs way way back, shown at the Encino Velodrome riding Medici track bikes.
Mark's old bike as I read it has the Campagnolo 10 speed, if so it has probably has been spread to 130 mm wide as 120 125 mm was the norm.
Mark died this year, his older brother a year or two before. Sad all around.
Gibby is still living as far as I know, if he could be found and authenticates the bike that will help the valuation.
Medici is a brand who's time has not yet arrived. I think due to the history behind the brand and the the activities of the participants elsewhere.
Gian and Mike lost the use of the name Medici in '92 or so. I am not sure of the reason, but I figure William Recht Jr. had something to do with it.
So, in short they go cheap. Even examples in great shape.
That is why some good documentation from Gibby is worth finding.

I sold this 58cm Pro Strada in July 2010 for $400 to someone that was a Medici fan so he really wanted it. Tange Prestige and Shimano 600 in excellent condition.
There was a valuation thread in the last year or so with a red Columbus tubed/ all Campagnolo and sew ups/ kept in a closet kind of clean. I wanted that one bad.

A handsome looking bike and you state, the buyer really wanted it and the sales price was still "cheap".
"Blessed are the poor for they shall inherit the Medici."
I have one, and it is a solid clean bike, early, before the shooting stars on the down tube graphics. I got it cheap too.

I have a great one with a "splatter" 80s paint job. all super record....rides great!!! got it for 500.00. Ive had it for about 8 years now and it is still one of my regular rides. Looks like new. Back in the day i remember winning magazine carried a medici ad where a medici was parked out in front of a mansion next to a rolls royce and the caption said something like..."i think ill drive the medici today".

The fellow I sold a De Rosa to in Minnetonka has a beautiful Medici.
I asked him if he was interested in selling it, and all he did was smile.
Then, uttered a simple "no thank you."

This one has been listed every other day for at least a week. It suffers from poor photos and description. I suppose the seller may mean it's 56" c-c and 58" c-t or perhaps even centimeters.

$500. asking, and at that price the asking will continue, unfortunate for the seller.

Ok, I spoke with Gibby this past weekend and he did in fact vouch for the fact that the Pro Strada was indeed his bike. I'm hoping to get pictures this weekend and when I do, they'll get posted. I obviously cannot get verification from Mark (sadly) that the 55 was his bike....
I actually passed on a Medici (not De Medici, what the hell was I typing????) this weekend w/ Campy cranks,BB and headset for $200.... Probably shoulda got that one.
Thanks for the info so far guys!

What you need is an image of the bike with Gibby, (surely he is old enough to be called Gil?) An image of him racing on it in the day... or even get him to sign the frame.

I have a very early Columbus-tubed Medici Pro Strada that I likely will not part from. The later ones had chromed forks (the early ones are painted on the blades), and then they went to purchasing pre-built forks....

The very early Medici bikes had Masi lugs and Masi M cut out bottom brackets. We always assumed they were liberated from Masi. A bike with those parts even is shown in the first Medici literature.
Pretty early on Medici learned that chromed forks were easier to inventory than painted ones.

Im still curious about repechage....im sure he was a southern cal. racer. This guy knows more about the southern cal masis, medicis and confentes than jim cunningham.
