Vintage late 80's Shogun Alpine GT I found, need some help with its value!
Hey everyone,
I scanned the forums and got some insight on this bike, but I want to get the best insight possible for my situation. I used to have a specialized Allez around 4 - 5 years ago so I am semi-familiar with bikes, but still very new to most of the technicalities.
It's a Shogun Alpine GT.
Some details as listed on the page about it:
-Chromoly Double-Butted Frame
-CANTILEVER BRAKES: (I don't know what this means?)
Shimano BR-M454, Exage Action 500LX
-CRANKSET/CHAINWHEEL:
Shimano Biopace Mountain LX computer-designed Drive System
-WHEELS:
Araya 27 x 1 1/4 rims
Tri-Sport (black wall, wire bead)
-HANDLEBARS:
Shimano (drop)
-SPEEDOMETER/ODOMETER:
Cateye Micro CC-6000 (wired)
They are asking 300. I just need a bike that I can use to daily commute about 3.5 miles to school and back with while attending, so if anyone has any other suggestions I am always open for others. (general tips, whatever)

Welcome to the forums this is not he bike for you. Only worth half the asking price plus I just woudln't deal with this guy.

Quasi-touring bike. Around here, IF it is ready to go, price is good, particularly for a small frame bike in a hot market like Portland, OR, where Xmart stuff can sometimes go for $300.
For a 3 mile commute, you could spend a lot less if you just went with a rigid frame mtb instead. They are plentiful, they are near indestructible, they can easily accommodate fenders and racks, change the tires to road tires, and they work great.
How much time are you willing to spend looking for a bike? How far are you willing to drive? How much work are you willing to put into one? All of these factors come in to play if you want a better deal. I find deals on bikes all of the time, but they all need work, usually a lot of work. Today's pickup had a stuck seat post, stuck stem, stuck bottom bracket, needed new tires, cables, housings, bearings, grease, etc.

Hmm.. Okay, good to know. I am actually in the Portland, OR area (Vancouver, WA) looking for a bike through craigslist. I'm moving to Denver, CO (pretty flat).
A rigid frame mountain bike, eh? I can see how that could be a good idea. My price range is right around 350, I have 400 total to spend but that includes a helmet and any repairs I might need to do to the bike. I also really like drop handlebars, would this look ridiculous on a mtb?
Do you have any good suggestions on where I should start looking for a good rigid frame mtb bike in that price range? I'm willing to do any general fixing on the bike but nothing too complex past what a novice with a couple wrenches could manage.

You are in one of the most expensive towns to buy a vintage bike. I would wait til you get to Denver. If you are traveling by car, I'd look along the way too. I always find bikes on road trips.

Gah that really sucks. I am travelling by car, so maybe I will look along the way. Is ebay considered pretty fruitless..?

Ebay is not a good option in the sub 400 dollar range unless you come across a local pickup in your area. You will spend about 100 on shipping alone. It just does not make economic sense.

Road trip? Excellent. There are lots of good fishing spots between Denver and Portland. Boise? SLC? Eastern Oregon? etc. Make it an adventure. But I like looking for bikes.

Thanks for all the input guys! I am considering waiting until Denver to do some bike shopping then, and I will for sure look along my way down there.
I'd rather get more bang for my buck and it's sounding like I'll have an easier time doing that out of the area I'm currently in. Good to know that ebay is pretty much a no go at the 400 dollar range.

I would definetley agree that the OP will fiend better prices in Denver. Portland is about the most expensive city in North America for used road bikes. In the $200-300 price range one can actually find some pretty decent stuff in Denver in a lot of the bike shops nicely fixed up and ready to ride. Since a lot of the smaller independent shops and dealers spend extra time during winter fixing stuff up there is usually a pretty good seletion of stuff around mid March or so.
