I'm not certain how much this bike qualifies as a classic or vintage, but this seems to be the best place to ask about it. I have a DeBernardi SLX that I've been trying to sell to fund another bike build. I'm wondering if my valuation of it is off as I'm not having much luck so far.

It's 58 cm NOS frame that I built up with a mix of Campy parts. Frame has some paint chips on the top tube, but the bike has less than 500 km on it.

I'm asking $1200 for it locally and haven't had any nibbles at all. Is my price way off? Would it make more sense to part something like this out?

Well, it has a few things working against it:

It's large.
It's a smaller name
It's a part mix
It's off sseason
it's hard to sell any bike locally for over $500 in most areas.

It's hard to say without knowing your local market, but this bike screams part out to me. Parted out on the bay - I'm guessing 250 on the frame, 600ish parts. Complete...maybe $700. These are pre-fee prices.

I think I'd have a very hard time selling that on CL, even pretty cheap.

Hmm. Well, used bike prices in Vancouver are a bit crazy but you raise some valid points. I may have to strip it down I was really hoping to avoid that.

As said in most markets it is real tough to get full value out of a nice race level trainer. Full value on this bike should be around $900-1000 based on components and frame. In most markets you will be hard pressed to get half of that off of CL. So to get value you will need to expand your selling outside your local market using ebay or sites like this and be prepared to ship. Sad thing is you may need to strip this to get your investment back and even then you may loose some of your investment. Just a totally great bike though nothing I can realy say against it.

1200 won't work. Even in a crazier market like Van City, most folks are looking for cheap transport on craigslist. I suspect 500/600$ would be tough, though someone would likely buy it for parts at that level.

As a rule, the high end stuff sits on Craigslist when priced at ebay pricing.

Thanks for the responses. Looks like I'm wasting my time with CL. A friend of mine owns an LBS here in Vancouver that does a fair bit of consignment business. I might wait a few weeks and try my luck with that before parting it out.

On consignment you'll be even worse off IMO, unless the shop is going to put it on ebay for you. The problem is that it's a local sale. To get any money for something like this you need to sell it to a larger audience, or better yet, do the painful thing and part it out. Especially since you have a mix of parts on there.

Some local offers are starting to trickle in around 6-700. I may wait it out until spring and see how it goes. I don't want to overvalue the bike, but unless I can get 8 or 9 hundred out of it I may have to suck it up and just ride the damn thing

I think 800-900 is ambitious, especially complete, but it's not out of the question/lunatic in a hot market with $$$. I think 700 is a solid number on a small name bike in a local sale, but I also understand having a"what it's worth to me" price.

$700 is a decent offer.

I would take it, unless you have the energy to sell each and every part.

That could mean many trips to a post office, finding decent boxes for the wheels and frame and on and on etc.

And it IS a lot of work. I helped a good friend with no ebay account part out a bike. Similar price situation. A pristine 1988 Schwinn Prologue with a barely used Super Record group. Some guy bought it, raced it once and parked it. Photos and listing of every single part. Headset, seat post, BB, everything. IIRC it grossed a little over $1200 with the frame going for about $275. It was a weekends worth of labor on my part and he shipped everything.

So that was net about $1020, not counting packing material and buying small boxes if you don't have them already. (I hoard them) :-) And assuming you have the ebay account with stellar feedback selling bicycle items.
