Trek 420
I have a chance to buy a Trek 420 for $100. it is all original except for saddle and tires, and it is my size. I don't really need it, but it looks to be in good shape - dirty, scratched a bit, but otherwise OK. What is FMV on an '89 that sold for $460 or so when new?

You shouldn't wait when it is a rideable TREK road bike at $100. Just go get it. Typically worth at least 1/2 MSRP when paint is clean and bike is refurbished, YMMV.

We have a bit of weather going on now, so it may be Sunday before I can pass cash to the seller. Unless one of his close neighbors buy it, I should be OK.

Definitely worth it. Decent original 400s are worth $200 and up. And this one is a 420 and your size. You won't regret it.

Well I picked up the 420 today. Other than some dirt and a small ding in the down tube, the paint is very good. There are far fewer chips than I expected (Imron is tough). The rear wheel needs to be touched up due to a slight truing issue, but I backed off the rear brake pads and have been riding around the neighborhood for a while. I also need to remove some scratches from the seat post, and do something about the bar tape. The owner has some wrist numbness issues, and wrapped large gel fishing jig tails under the tape as a cushion. Here are some quick photos (sorry about the mess in my work area).

I removed the jig tails from under the bar wrap and re-wrapped with the same tape. I think I now know why the PO put the extra padding there. He had put 23mm Gatorskins on the wheels, and they give a harsh ride. If I decide to keep it I am definitely going to put 28mm tires on it and replace the Avenir gel saddle. A few more photos.

If you have to replace rear shift cable don't pull old one out without tying on a string or wire to guide new one in! Don't ask me how I know you should do that!
