1983 Schwinn Super Sport SP

I've got an opportunity to pick up a 1983 Schwinn Super Sport SP that is an 8 or 9 condition. Unfortunately I don't have any pics yet, but the seller is asking $175. Seems like a fair price to me, but don't know too much about Schwinn roads, It's Tange tubing so it's got to be decent, any thoughts out there? Thanks!

This is the catalog for the bike, 1983 Schwinn Catalog

I picked up the model just below this, the super sport, for $90 which was in an 8 or 9 condition as well. The SP model you are looking at has nicer parts (cyclone derailleurs, sugino crank) but the frame between the 2 models is similar (Tange champion) (although it looks like the SP has an investment cast fork crown which is a nice touch).

As a rider the price is OK; not a great deal but certainly a fair price. I thought that super sport I picked up was a very nicely made bike. I think they're made by Panasonic.

Thanks for the info. I think it'll make a good project project for my future sister in law, she's been asking for a bike for awhile, but haven't found a bike her size at a halfway decent price in awhile

It's a really fine bike and as a keeper the price is fine. The parts and frame are all very high quality on the bike.

Yes

its a smoking deal. Ever price sugino at crankset with proper bottom bracket? The superb levers, Cyclone collectible tear deer. If you want a premium level bicycle and a simple one to maintain, the Panasonic made top end one here is a smoking deal. I’d take it over a Surly Truck any day. That is regardless of being 10x cheaper. I’ve had a few and I’m always amazed. The racks are important to get also so don’t discard thinking you’ll just put some planet bike on or whatever. People correctly are going to touring and sport touring bicycle dimensions for bicycles, and this is a smoking hot bicycle . Just don’t throw away the old thinking new is better. These were the AK 47 of
bicycles and you never notice when you ride them anything... they do their job and are like an extension of your wants. I don’t understand why the masses ride Lance Armstrong’s racing bicycle for cruising or
weekend worrior riding...it’s like a corvette for a grocery getter. One pothole with 23c tires can ruin your day- and wheel. A 700x32 Pasela (non tour guard wire bead at $25) will roll great, not flat, and not knock your hands off the bars if you hit that pothole. So if you want to turn around and sell... you’ll regret it. But a $100 and some elbow grease and you can out do a Truck. My 3 cents.

Oh and the brakes and brake levers are the one upgrade I recommend on classics. Most the stuff was great- SunTour was really nice...but brakes Sucked back then. Check bottom bracket adj., refresh grease, tighten crank bolts and a drop or two of triflow in every bearing ...wd40, OOOO Steel wool, some motor oil and grease and that’s the stuff they loved. Like an old Chevy...don’t put that expensive **** it...they like the cheap stuff and lots of it! - okay kinda
