1970s Hi-E sealed bearing wheelset
-
SOLD!! SOLD!! SOLD!! SOLD!! SOLD!! SOLD!!
After 6 months with no suitable project, I need to clear up some space. Higher-res photos here, click to magnify on each: https://imgur.com/a/4ERTs
Here's a sealed-bearing Hi-E wheelset from early-mid 70s on Araya 27" clinchers. Hi-E was innovative lightweight tech for the 70s with interesting history (links below)...
These were sitting for at least 20 years before I bought them in a parts lot. Light surface blemishes. I've done nothing to clean up or service either, it looks like they'd clean up nicely.
Holding the axle tube, the rear hub spins buttery smooth, front is as-smooth in quality, but I notice a mild aberration at one point in the spin - more like a bit of sand than a click or warp.
Rear hub sticker is good. Front hub sticker intact but peeling off. Galvanized spokes still in decent shape, I showed the worst spots, see the bigger pics. No Hi-E skewers, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
These would look really cool on something period-correct. I can't tell you the last time I saw any. That said, no $400 eBay pricing here!
I'd happily take $150 + actual ship thru BikeFlights from 30309 in a standard wheel box or trade for an interesting frame/fork in the 56-59 cm ctt range (57-58cm is ideal).
History: HiE, main
Parts and spec sheets: MOMBAT: Hi-E History
I'll get around to posting higher-res pics as soon as imgur will load for me again. Click these to browse through.

How about a 57-58 cm Nishiki Modulus frame set? It's going to be a year before I get to that frame. Pretty cool Tange 2.

These Hi-E hubs are a great temptation but I don't really have the right project for them! They really should go to someone building up a Teledyne Titan or Exxon Graftek or some other period correct super-light bike...
Having said that, if they aren't sold by this time tomorrow I will buy them.

@jjames1452 tempting proposition, got pics? If I can sell, it'll take precedence over trade in this case.
@obrentharris Have some higher res pics, you can click on each to magnify to full size, looks to be a little better quality than the forum's resize: Hi-E wheelset - Album on Imgur
Not looking to make a buck on these, just looking to recoup money I spent on the lot.

No worries. After I photographed the frame, I kinda wanted to build it.

It's pretty sweet, and I seriously considered it. I'm trying to be good and actually reduce clutter while increasing the budget. All this buying Italian and Japanese lately, I'm going to need to change my username around here
