WTB 144BCD Triplizer

I have a Sugino Super Mighty crank I would love to have as a triple. Does anybody has a middle triplizer ring they want to sell or swap for a correct drillium middle ring?

Bikes: Several, mostly not name brands.

Red Clover makes one:

https://www.redclovercomponents.com/..._42_Teeth.html

I have the 122mm BCD version and can vouch for its quality.

Bikes: 1967 Paramount; 1982-ish Ron Cooper; 1978 Eisentraut "A"; two mid-1960s Cinelli Speciale Corsas; and others in various stages of non-rideability.

I put the 122mm (Stronglight 93 compatible) version on my brother-in-law's early 1970s Gitane Tour de France, and I have the 144mm (2nd gen Campy Record) version on my Eroica/Cino complaint Cinelli. I, too, can vouch for the quality. Jon is your guy. Be sure you get the correct bolts from him, too.

I have wanted one, too, for a long time. I also have a Sugino Mighty Comp that could use it.

I'm just having a hard time swallowing that the triplizer is about twice the value of the crank and I would still have to buy the small ring.

What width are the slots in the arms?

Get five bolts with a diameter that, some spacers, and mount the new ring to your existing arms with the bolts through the slots.

The key problem here is 144bcd. The smallest chainring you can mount on one of those is 42. Well I have heard of 41 teeth chainrings for 144bcd but I'm yet to see one.

Reassess its value next time you are mashing, grinding and slogging your way up a mountain road, sweat dripping in your eyes and from your chin, all for fun while on vacation. The price is what it is, the VALUE is context-dependent.

Sadly 'value' is not exactly a good way to look at it as for the price of the triplizer I can buy two vintage triple cranks, and that doesn't even take into account that I would still have to purchase the third ring.

Heck for the price of the new triplizer and extra rings there are some quite fantastic vintage cranks to be had.

144mm BCD cranks have a lip that the the chainrings sit on. The slot is exactly the size needed to clear that lip. Whether the lip is the same size on Suginos I have no idea.

I agree that Red Clover triplizers.ain't cheap. I do think you get your money's worth. Whether or not to spend that much for the product is an individual decision, and I respect that you do not want to.

I just did a very quick eBay search and came up with only two or three options, all from Willow (also a good product), all over $100 and none for 144mm BCD. This tells me that your options are limited. The easy ones are Red Clover and a triple crankset.

You may already know this, but keep in mind that (1) you will almost certainly need a different bottom bracket if you go triple (regardless of whether you use a triplizer or a triple crankset), (2) you will likely need a different rear derailleur and (3) you might need a different front derailleur.

Good luck

The new bottom bracket is what stopped me from purchasing one a while back. I already had the derailleurs but the total cost got prohibitive. My solution was to use a wide range Ultra-6 freewheel (13-34) and a smaller chain ring up front (42-45). The set up allows me to scale various western mountain roads, so, I am happy.

abdon, I just realized we are stepping all over your WTB advertisement. I apologize and will cease.

No worries, step away. I'm leaning towards getting a whole new crank.

The other thing is that the Sugino Super Mighty has drillium rings, replacing the middle ring with a non drilled triplizer ring would detract from the whole look. It would be an expensive proposition to end with less bling. I may as well go for a pretty vintage triple crank from the get go.

Perhaps I was not clear enough.

Put the bolts for your 110/86/whatever BCD ring through the SLOTS in the arms, not the existing chainring-bolt holes.

You are correct, Abdon, that for the price of a good tripleizer you can purchase a pretty decent crankset (the mid-late 80’s Deore ones are particularly tasty) and perhaps even the correct BB. Additionally, those cranksets typically come in the more common 110/74 BCD combination, making it easier to obtain new chainrings at a lower price should they be required. This is how I set up all of my compact doubles and touring triples. As an aside, after mich experimentation have found that a 48/36/24 triple combination (which I often pair with a 12-34 rear cassette) seems to me to be the best shifting.

Alternatively, you may find that an SR Apex 86 bcd crankset works for you. Although rings are harder to find and generally more expensive than 110/74”s, some folks feel that the design aesthetic is worth the effort and money. I use one of those set up as a 48/28 compact double (again, with a 12-34 on the rear) on the Raleigh Gran Tour. Very pretty and works a charm.

Is this the same one you're describing by any chance? I've been trying to find info on it but the 6 bolt center is throwing me off.

Nope, that isn't the one. What Jon sold (and, sadly, no longer does) had five bolts with a standard 74mm bolt center diameter drilling. I have no clue what you have pictured there.

The title of this thread caught my eye, so I chime in to add that the even though the 122 BCD triplizer is indeed gone for good, I still have 144 triplizers as well as 37-tooth 122 rings for double cranks.

I hated to let go of the 122 triplizer, which was the first version I made. But given the minimum batch size, my cost per unit, and the number of them that I could hope to sell in a year, I'd have to live to be about 105 to have any hope of breaking even by restocking.

Yeah, it is too bad no one makes a crank with three chainrings from the factory!

I have no idea who made this. It was installed already.

That squiggle in front of the 41 tells me it's Ofmega/Avocet. It's pretty worn too. Here are pics of Campy and TA rings (newer and older style) that I have. TA are still made. You can find them in Europe and occasionally in the US. Campy only made NR style. TA only made SR style.

I know Mr. Kontact is being facetious because many of them were made for many years. But Stronglight still makes one, or maybe more. Even a tandem version.

IMPACT JIS TRIPLE | Stronglight

and TA still makes their Pro 5 Vis, what we used to call Cyclotourist.

Pro 5 Vis

And even Sugino still makes triples.

Search: 10 results found for "triple" – SUGINO STORE

But of course for you Campy die-hards, this guy still does triple conversions I've done a hundred or more in the last 40 years or so. Small ring bolt circle is 74, so many different rings are available. Have even triplized a few 151 cranks, but that's another story.

From: San Francisco - it used to be nice

Bikes: 1970 Alex Singer, 63 Hetchins, 75 Motobecane Townie, more . . .

The tripleizer with the TA 6-bolt granny was made a LONG time ago by none other than framebuilder Bernie Mikkelsen.

I might have one or two, I'll scratch around in my parts morass.

Jim Merz also made a tripleizer eons ago. I don't recall if he did a TA granny, though.

The triple replacement for a Sugino Mighty Comp would be the Sugino Mighty Tour:

But it is 110 BCD only, so the granny is a 34 or maybe 33. But that's the price of keeping it classy.

Another version of class, if 35 will do, is this (Campag Triomphe):
