For Sale 1971 Cinelli SC size 58

WAS $1500 plus shipping. I’ll ship world wide.

NOW, $OLD plus shipping.

This was one half of the his/hers Cinelli I picked up.

An Oregon couple on their honeymoon were backpacking around Europe in 1971 when they saw people on bikes in Milano. Inquiring where the nearest bike shop was, they were led to Cino Cinelli's own workshop. Bought and ridden all over Europe, North America and South America too.

I spent hours cleaning and restoring the "hers" as a gift to my sweetie for Christmas that until recently I really didn't even notice the "his" wasn't actually my size.

It came to me with this strange wheel combo. 27" Weiman in the front, Araya in the back, laced to Campy hubs with 71 date stamps. I was told after looking for some sew-ups and not finding any, he succumbed to buying 27" wheels and clincher tires.

I know Cinelli originally came with Fiamme, and I don't have the originals or any in my stash. We could either hash out a rim deal, or take some bucks off and sell it sans wheels.

Bike didn't come with a pump, but I had a too tall one for any of my bikes, and a Velcro strap that says "COMCAST" on it to hold it in place.

Bike also had plastic pedals. I have some old campy's that could use some love, or an overnight soak in some vinegar plus the proper Christophe clips and from my own personal stash, some Bindi straps.

I removed the old Grab-On grips but didn't see the rational on re-taping with proper cloth until either proper hoods were sourced or maybe the new owner wants to swap out the Universals for some Campy side-pulls.

If you are in the Portland or even Seattle area, happy to grab some different wheels, swap out the freewheel and let you take-her out for a spin.

Restore or just ride it as is and forget about it.

Pre-date campy strada…170 52/42

No lip

Patent 1971

Old logo

Size 26.2 Strange unicanitor seat with quilting

Campy hubs. These wheels …. We can swap but I do not have any Fiamme which is what should be in there. How about some gray Ambrosio?

More pics/ details

Blackburn rack and English fender.

Caimi freewheel Regina chain

Chrome looks like it would shine up nicely

I didn’t understand the QR on the seat post until I tried to fit this in my Alfa Romeo trunk. Now I get it.

But wait, there is more!! Brand new tape and some campy pedals with Christophe clips. Reg strap buttons. There is a new shoe repair shop near me. Young owner is a cyclist. He and I were talking about re-dying straps. I would do that for the new owner of this bike. Greta approves!!

Pedals from my own stash, with Alfredo Bindi straps from my own stash. Jef approved.

Proving once again that Cinelli sought chaos regarding serial numbers.
‘there must be a screw into the back of the head tube to locate the pump.
note the mirror image about the seat tube herald for the World championship colored bands.

nice bike, saddle is a bit later I think, the revised shape appeared in 1972. But Cino might have allocated them to the workshop first. Does it have a Cinelli label underneath or only a circle with a number?

There was no pump. Her bike has a pump and if they always rode together…..

I had an extra and a Velcro strap.

the “hers” bike has the same colored bands orientation.

I will check the saddle.

but not showing in the 58 is how that pump handle is staying in place. At least I am not seeing it.

I’ve struggled with finding my dream cinelli

last year I uncovered a bike shop rafter hanger stored in a collector’s (hoarder?) bathroom.

1970 but cycle art paint job with way too much metallic. Looked like a bass fishing boat.

Plus they added all the braze ons. And a full 1980 NiB campy record group.

nothing was right and I could not make myself live with it.

I love Rich’s Cinelli. A little patina, some stories and adventures and he rides it anywhere. Nothing is sacred. I just wish this fit me.

That's a really cool SC! Very interesting to actually see fenders on the bike.
Interesting thing about the RD's SS spring cable sheath on it. I actually have that on almost all my bikes, regardless of age, because it's such a quaint final mechanical touch you can put on a C&V bike.

this is right near a change in Cinelli stock geometry. By appearance the seat tube is slacker than the head tube. The 58cm size… many bikes at this time were measured Center to Top. A declaration on how it was measured might help some on the fence. The C.O.N.I. Book used that convention, aka the Cinelli book.
‘from my perspective, he change to center to center happened near the beginning of the oversized top tubes, a decade after this bike or more.

the price is I think pretty reasonable for a near unmolested machine.
‘the saddle is later, 1972-1974. Cinelli #2.

just caught the ctc measure, so near 59.5 cm center to top

I was hoping that the TT was not 57. That is pretty normal for ST and TT in my garage

Was 26.2 pretty standard for Cinelli seat tubes? Trying to figure out the math on that one for Columbus tubes. Flipped tube?

Yes, it was standard. I'm not the expert that many here are, but I always assumed it was due to extra reinforcement needed for their stays.

While definitely an inserted reinforcement to narrow a standard Columbus, Reynolds or Falck tube (Cinelli used at least those three), whether it is for the stays, supporting the seat post, stiffening the frame, or whatever, I'm not certain of the exact purpose.

it's here on bikeforums where i recall learning that the seatlug is sleeved for strength, hence the 26.2. One of the quick ways to identify clones and wannabes...
