Raleigh threaded hole in underside of downtube

Raleigh threaded hole in underside of downtube
I am refurbishing a 1983 Raleigh Marathon. I discovered a threaded hole (like the ones for a water bottle cage) on the underside of the down tube. It is higher up that the ones for the cage. What is the purpose of this threaded hole?

Hmmmm. I don't know. However if it were on top of the downtube I would suggest it was a direct mount for Suntour Symmetric shifters (they were also available as a clamp on). You say there is just one hole? Could it be for some screw on cable stop? Or shifters? How about a photo?
Hey look at post #8 in this link to this forum. Look closely at the cable stops. They look like they're mounted at the bottom of the down tube and I see no clamp.

There was a Suntour cable stop near there but it is the clamp on type.

IIRC, it was first a Flikstand mount which I think then got re-purposed by Raleigh into a cable stop mount.

I recall seeing a composite cable stop there on a Technium frame, seems it might be susceptible to age-related cracking.

I've searched online and can't find those type of stops anywhere. I do like that design better than the clamp on style. I think I will try to make one. I have something in mind. Just gotta get it from my mind, through my hands, and into the steel.

Plastic/cable stop does not seem to compute very well......Even Flikstands were known to dry up and asplode after some time in the weather.....

Unrelated question:
what is the triangular thing on the brake pads? (Shown in Lascouxcaveman's pic above.) I could not figure out the purpose they served and was going to discard them, but figured I should keep them just in case.

Them ' s wheel guides for quicker wheel changes as it guides the wheels be ween the calipers.....
