Just finished kitting out my son's 24" road bike and was excited to take a spin around the neighborhood. Went to grab my Raleigh Gran Sport and noticed the rear tire was flat oh well.. ill patch it quick then go.. took a closer look and noticed the tire blew off the rim and ripped the sidewall .. there is a now a huge flap of tire about a 1'' by 3" just hanging.. tube is blown out... not sure how this happened.. I did some research and found out this does happen with pasellas from time to time. I've only got about <200 miles on the tire so is there any chance I can get it warrantied? and if so how? I already emailed panaracer, but I haven't heard back yet. I purchased them about a year ago, so they really are not that old. Probably end up buying another tire, but i'm miffed that this occurred with these tires and expected better I guess...

I doubt you'll get anywhere, but try contacting whoever it is your purchased the tire from, rather than Panaracer directly.

What did you have the tire inflated to? Hooked-bead or non-hooked-bead rim?

it was a non hooked rim, i keep the gran sport at 90psi.. i would expect the tube to blow out if the tire slipped off the rim, but the damage to the tire indicates a failure ..

got them off ebay, so i contacted the seller, they directed me to the manufacturer.. i read a few reviews that some people were able to get a warranty replacement.. if i don't get anywhere with them, i will try and contact them through there facebook page if they have one.. this worked for my crock pot that broke randomly.. (crock pot's facebook page that is)

@GordoTrek - do you want to replace it with another Pasela? If so, I have one with very few miles, that I will give to you for the cost of shipping. I'm in Oregon, if that helps. PM me if you're interested.

You are going to have a really hard time showing that it was the tire and not the installation / use, especially if they are a year old. I would just buy another tire. If Panaracer replaces it, good on them, I'd still try that route.

The bummer is that none of my LBSes stock Panaracer Paselas -- they either feign complete ignorance or pull out a catalog to say that they could probably order them in. That said, in the 6 years since I started riding seriously again, vintage-y bikes are starting to become more common in my area, so perhaps the LBSes could be pressuring into stocking them. Currently, if they have anything 27" and/or gumwall, it'll be the cheap Kenda or CSTs.

That sucks.
I forget that I'm spoiled by living in the city.
It's a lot easier to get what I need.

But even then, my local bike shops, don't have the resources
or the space to stock every kind of bike tire.
So it's not out of line to have to order the tires I want.

Yeah, I can't hold it against them when I might be the only person asking for some of these things. One shop didn't have any pin spanners in stock, and given that most people are riding on or will be switching to cartridge BBs next, it's understandable.

On the plus side, I'm seeing a lot more Brooks saddles in the local stores. That used to be a rarity when I started riding again.

i got some traction from their facebook page, they want me to send a photo and detail the problem. Hopefully they replace it. @Velocivixen I would love to take you up on that.. as long as shipping doesn't cost as much as new one. I'm in Rochester, NY let me know if the rates work

...I live in a pretty large Metro area in California, and don't know of anyone who carries Paselas in stock, or any other Panaracer tire for that matter.

Check for root cause before you blame the tire. Paselas do have thin side walls. That's part of why they ride so nice. I blew out my front due to a burr at the seam in my vintage rim that rubbed the sidewall through to failure.

Lining up the label with the stem on the DS is pretty nerdy but it helps find the problem in situations like this.

thats the first thing i did, check for debris and brake rub.. nothing.. even if i had brake rub, i don't ride the bike enough for the brake rub to blow through the tire without noticing it first

@GordoTrek - I just looked at the tire and it's actually 27" x 1 1/4", not 1 1/8". Looks like USPS has Medium Flat Rate Box 2-day mail for $12.65, but I could be reading it wrong. I don't trust postage "estimates" because I've been misinformed by various vendors. Let me know if you're still interested, etc.

Mine (I have several) do stock them, but I can't justify spending double the price I could get them for online. I just can't bring myself to do that. I buy things from them all the time, and I am willing to pay somewhat higher prices for the convenience, but not that high.

My LBS don't support anything pre 2005.. I called around asking for a cotter pin and they thought I didn't know what I was talking about and must be explaining something wrong. too much carbon heads and hipsters running the joints i guess..

That's because it's called a cotter in this country. The British call it a cotter pin. A cotter pin is something completely different here.

Still, most modern bike shops don't support that kind of old tech. When was the last cottered crank made?
A shop that has a bunch of old bike parts on hand maybe. But a "modern" shop? Not.

My local shop has a cotter press and at least one mechanic that knows how to use it.

I haven't seen Panaracer tires in any LBS, and I've been to quite a few. So next time, maybe it's better to support a non local bike shop instead of some unknown on ebay.

Another good point. I don't feel guilty buying my Panaracers online, because that's pretty much my only option. If they were to magically appear in my local shops, I'm sure they'd be pricier and then I'd have a dilemma on my hands. Maybe I'd split the difference to help "encourage" the shop to keep them in stock.
