Rebuilding my 81 Trek 710

As much as I like the way my Trek is currently built (10spd barcons w/ 12-34 cassette, combo of XT and tricolor 600 components and Sugino Mighty Tour 48-34 cranks and Mavic Open Pro rims laced to White Industries hubs) I want to build it in a period correct non Shimano build.

I have a bunch of Suntour bits, 1st gen Cyclone, some Superbe etc that I plan on using. What would be the appropriate stuff to use on this frame? I know I can go on Velobase but I'd rather hear what you guys have to say.

Bikes: I've lost my mind!

My 81 710 came with a Sugino triple and Suntour Vx derailleurs.

otg - Gorgeous bits! That crainset floats my boat (or rather buoys my bike).

Bikes: 1978 Trek TX700; 1978/79 Trek 736; 1984 Specialized Stumpjumper Sport; 1984 Schwinn Voyageur SP; 1985 Trek 620; 1985 Trek 720; 1986 Trek 400 Elance; 1987 Schwinn High Sierra; 1990 Miyata 1000LT

My 78 Trek came as a 736- with an Arabesque Shimano 600 group on it.

Truth be told, it did not shift well. I had kind of resigned to that bike just being "that way" and possibly putting it up for trade bait someday. Then I scored some Cyclone bits- the RD and the FD looked and worked great. The levers were replaced with Superbe levers- I then scored a Stronglight 99 BIS crankset and some Superbe brakes- the brakes worked so much better and looked so much better than the Arabesque brakes. I was worried about the Cyclone FD and the triple- but it functions perfectly. I'd known that the Cyclone came with a cage extension to extend and lower the cage- but I've also read that the extension causes problems and the FD really doesn't need it.

The shifters are not of the age of the rest of the components- they're the 1985-ish Suntour Sprint shifters- the "micro ratcheting" shifters. I bought a set of old Superbe shifters just to get the Suntour band clamp. I'm considering replacing those with some Sachs/Huret ratcheting shifters- 1. Because they function so nice 2. Because they're unique- a very nice young man on this forum gifted me a Sachs/Huret band clamp.

The only thing that's Shimano on the bike are the hubs- they look and function fine and I just don't feel the need to search and acquire and spend to switch them out because they're "Shimano." Of course, if a high flange Superbe or other quality wheelset magically appeared, I would do it in a minute.
