Do you ever struggle with downsizing?
 

I need to get rid of a few bicycles, and I'm indecisive to the point of paralysis.

1974 Fuji The Finest
1979 Raleigh Clubman
1980 Schwinn Voyageur in Chrome
1985 Schwinn Super Le Tour in Red

I plan on getting rid of 3 of them, whether it be complete bikes or parts. All are 57-59cm. The Two schwinns are on the chopping block for one reason or another, but I'm paralyzed between the Clubman or the Finest.

The Clubman: Reynolds 531. Nice ride. If I sold it, id put some lesser parts on it before it heads out, or sell it as frame+fork only.

The finest. Came to me super low mileage, but the wrong wheels and seat. So I have a set of the velomine wheels on it. Id swap on some ukai's with semi matching high flange hubs. Otherwise stocky stock

What would you do Classic & Vintage? The Raleigh is beyond classy, The Fuji has a cushier ride and chrome lugs.

If I were you, I would definitely swap out the saddle (That looks to be a very nice condition Brooks B17 it's wearing) before selling the Clubman. Maybe put the Brooks seat on whichever bike you plan to keep.

One the biggest problems I have when downsizing is getting what have I in the bike out of it. Seems like most everything I sold over the last year I lost money on whether a complete bike, frame or parts.

In one word, YES.

I bought a modern steel bike.
It made downsizing easy.

Of course, now I want more of those.

'79 triple, downtube shifters, center pull brakes, Zefal pump... all it needs is a broken-in 30 year old Brooks saddle and it would be priceless.

Getting rid of old bikes is a great excuse to get a new bike. If I'd held onto all my old bikes I'd have a ramuda of 10 not including the new Z85 I probably wouldn't have purchased.

I'd keep the clubman myself. The Fuji is nice, but the Raleigh does it for me.

When I downsized a few years ago I simply kept what I wanted. I didn't swap any components other than a wheel set on the bikes I sold. The D-A bike stayed D-A, the 105 bike stayed 105 and so on. My '89 Cannondale could've been a 7700 build, but it was already a 6400 build that I really like anyways. YMMV. :)

The Raleigh is really nice. I'd keep that 'un.

I haven't had enough upper-tier bikes to require a choice between them. Up till now each purchase has been a step up in class compared to what was here already so the decision was easy. I can see a future where the choices start becoming more difficult....

I would have an awful hard time relinquishing that Raleigh. That's a beautiful bike.

What is this downsizing of which you speak?

Pretty sure that's when you sell some furniture to make room for your bikes.

I don't struggle with downsizing, although it can take a while for them to move on (OK, I guess I struggle with it after all!). I did sell three of my keepers this year. One I really should have parted out as I would have gotten 2X for it.

Oh...yeah...I've done that.

easy, keep the raleigh, sounds like you don;t ride either that often if they were this close, so keep the sexier one to look at

4-2=2, that is good enough for me.

To sell off enough to get to four of one brand... That might be a challenge for me in a few cases.
Your problems are minor.
Unless you want to free up capital, then place them both for sale and keep the one that does not sell first.

Yes, I am always struggling with down with downsizing as the cost of construction and adding extra rooms to my house has got prohibitive! :D
To be serious,I keep most of my bikes in my studio and the ceiling is almost 20'0" high (lots of wall not that many bikes), when I run out of hanging space there the problems will begin....right now its just hard to get a few down for exercise....still no garage queens!

Keep the clubman.

The clubman is the nicer bike in my eyes but if you find the Fuji rides better then keep that one.

I know far too well how the Fuji rides. I rarely use mine, but keep it because I ask myself, if I could only keep one bike, which one can do pretty much everything - and the answer is the Fuji. Strange logic huh?

On the other side of things, there are quite a few Fujis out in the world, and I honestly didn't know there was a '79 Clubman until this thread (and I have spent way too much time perusing Raleigh catalogs). That bike just has a look to it.

Sure you don't have another one that's an easier choice to let go of?

Look at my signature line...I have NO problem with downsizing (as the sarcasm simply drips off those words!)...

As for your choice...I am aligned with most people here...keep the Clubman!

I prefer "upscaling": scale a ladder, install hooks in the rafters, hang more bikes up.

That Clubman is gorgeous, plus I would hate to see all the Raleigh pantographed equipment to come off of it. But if the Fuji rides better, enjoy the ride. Which do you value more in this group of two bikes? Presumably you have others with special qualities.
