Never been to northern Michigan. You guys have hills there? (was similarly shocked to hear of hills in Minnesota).

If you don't like the term fixie, then call it whatever you wish. But, if you get too creative, be prepared for a lot of questions and quizzical looks.

I would suggest Harvey, because I like it. It reminds me of the movie.

You should refer to a fixed gear bicycle as a "Fixie" only if you also refer to a bowel movement as a "Poopie".

Two things:

1) Fixie don't care.
2) How do we feel about "coastie"?

I think some people not into bikes, think a "fixie" is any road bike. I have seen several ads on c'list lately labeled as fixie but the bike clearly had gears and shifters.

How about the term "Ten Speed", coined in the early seventies = perhaps that needs a bit of fixing, also..!-)

Very hilly, hills on every ride. We turn out a good number of professionals because of it. Mountain bikes are king here. When a mountain biker takes to the road they are unstoppable.

That was a fixie waiting to happen. You know, a pre-hipster bike.

You should see the looks on my house guests' faces when I announce that it's "poopy time" for me. Life is too short to get so bent out of shape about words like these.

I ride over 5K miles a year on fixed gear, commuting and long brevets. In fact I plan to ride PBP next month fixed. I don't really mind when people refer to my bike as a "fixie", not nearly as much as when they call it "single-speed".
