Exactly. Lots more moneyed 40+ year old guys wanting a spot of nostalgia than folks looking for vintage 56-58 Pista bikes.

Saw the exact Stingray on our local CL last week going for 350.00. At the time I had no idea there would be one in the shop just like it. I am one grateful (and surprised) biker.

I'm in love with the Miyata! BTW, Velomine frequently has deals on tubulars, you might check them.

The Miyata has that white knock-your-eyes-out pearlescent from back in the day. I've yet to wash it but so far I cant see any chips or wear. Looks like a bedroom bike, except the tires. Araya's need a polish. Gorgeous.

TugaDude 07-07-15 06:35 AM

Is the Miyata a 58cm, or close?

It's a 60.

Progress on the front wheel. Bright work is gleaming and now I will get after the spokes with steel wool. This is the "work" of restoration.

Yikes.

My kinda ratios :)

This looks like a great project and I'll be following your progress closely. Love these old Colnagos and this one doesn't appear to need much. Great color, too! Nice score.

That's FUNNY!

Maybe it is time to take mine out for a ride or two! Inspirational!

What's your plans with this?

Total resusitation. It will be my gentlemans bike but with the occasional thrashing on the fogline.

Oopsie, that's a "Perfect" model FW.

Same gold hue as my Mexico - I really think it looks good (I wasn't trying to be funny, OP)! I just got a chance to blow up the pic and note that the seatpost is pantographed - any other parts got panto?

I say it again: great find, nice score!

Oh no, that wasnt me laughing :). I am totally attentive and wired to this project. The paint shows enough wear to give the authenticity it deserves but the decals are expectedly toast. This is my first resto, other bikes have been service and refurb stuff.

Any ideas on removing the transfer/non-adhesive decals like this?

No other panto, this was a teens build for racing. Not much was fancy, totally business.

There might be others out there with easier methods; myself, I only had to do it once, on the Somec, and I used my fingernails and the edge of an old credit card to slowly chip away the remainders of the decals. If you've got the time...

Any other panto parts on that bad boy?

No, sorry to say nothing else out of the ordinary. Well, there is the snazzy engraving on the Cinelli bars.

Congrats on scoring a really nice ride.

I would not recommend Challenge tubulars. Quality is all over the board. One set I have is now the last ditch spares where another set soldiers on like a champ although the tread is starting to show signs of delamination. I have read a lot of reports of similar delamination. I have not ridden them yet, but for about $55/tire shipped from England you can get Vittoria Corsa SCs which I have heard are a good deal. We shall soon see as I ordered a pair.

Front wheel is finished, moving on to polishing the rear wheel. Also, doing a test soak with PB Blaster of the "Colnago Super" decals on the chain/stays to see if the decals are softened at all. There appears to be no paint damaging by the use of PBB from when soaking the seatpost loose. I will be ordering the proper decals from Cyclomondo, soon.

Thanx for your advice on avoiding those tires and I'll be awaiting your thoughts on the Corsa SC's. I'm about a month out on tire orders. That will be my near-last order in this resto project.

Check an auto body store for decal wheel, they mount in a drill and made of soft rubber. They remove decals quickly without harming paint.

jiangshi 07-09-15 08:09 AM

I have had good luck with Conti Sprinters. I use a Gatorskin version on the rear. I ride crappy roads (like MI) and they are trouble free and a decent ride for a tough tire. When I ride better roads, I stick to Conti 4000 or Competitions.

Automotive graphics are by and large pressure sensitive type, the colnago has either water or varnish fix transfers, a different animal. Might work, but I would not expect it to.

I suggest your first, tires should age, especially tubulars.

That was easy to decide. I was shocked to see it there. Back when the owner was racing, he chose the Cyclone because it shifted better in a hurry up. To have everything Campy and stick that on there? But then, that was a different day.
