I consider myself rather privileged to own a bike that rode to a state record. The grit was not cleaned, the bike sat all these decades awaiting a BF C&V treatment. I'll just have to amen myself. :)

Epic project. I stand in awed anticipation of the unveiling. :)

Decal removal:

I've had good success using my thumbnail and credit card to have removed all decals except headtube and most of the seat tube. Also, just now put the headtube on the bench buffer with very little Mother's aluminum polish. With patience this should finish the job well. No paint burning if done with care. Much easier and quicker. If one uses a Dremel, be very careful as they put down a lot of rpm's and could damage topcoat quickly. My bench buffer is underpowered with a larger wheel and just right for the job.

Ok, put the "good enuff" on the Campy Superleggero pedals and leather treated the straps.

Had the opportunity to check out a yard sale in Boyne City yesterday. Here is the sales manager!

My visit with OldsCool was too short, because I was running 90 minutes late. But we'll have a chance to meet again, as he has family that lives near me. I got to see his Trek 760 and his Cannondale, both beautiful builds. His Colnago project is coming along great in his vintage workshop. Oh, and that lovely Miyata has found a new home!

So good to meet you!

Alrighty.....decals are completely erased thanx to some help from a 13.00 drill attachment in the form of a rubber wheel that removes decals of all types that with the expected care to the job, will cause zero paint damage. Parts are being ordered and the dull campy alloy is starting to gleam in the meantime. Just a few more weeks.

An ETA: the paint is very light on this era of Colnago. Be very careful when doing any work on topcoat or decals. Being my first restoration of paint and decals I was very wary and made out ok. A bit unnerving at times.

Tires arrived this morning, pay't sent to Mr Softely for decals, cables being fitted....coming along nicely. :)

Stretching the tires for a prestretch was a cake walk. With full inflation they run straight and true, no lumps. Soon I will open the can of Panaracer glue and start the adventure. It's going to be a "Pleasant Valley Sunday". :)

I guess I missed where you shared what tires you were ordering.

re: Vittoria SCs You asked for my thoughts. At the moment they are aging in the basement. My immediate thought was the sidewall was more yellow than natural/tan. Fitting them on some rims, the area around the valve does not seat as nicely as some others. They did air up nice and straight and once aired up seated a bit better at the stem. Probably at least another month before they get ridden.

I went with the Servizio Corsa for starters. I was impressed by the ease of mounting. I was expecting every manner of contorting, pulling and maybe even the need of taking up cussing again. No so at all. The guys at Yellow Jersey coached me over the phone and were helpful at the time of ordering. I'm impressed and relieved.

Your suggestion literally won my day. Worked like autobody magic.

OldsCOOL 07-25-15 09:48 AM

After a 24hr prestretch I performed my first ever glue up.
Tires: Servizio Corse
Glue: Panaracer, large can w/brush.

No messes, no gloves, just one little area on thumb and forefinger with a glue mark. Following Yellow Jersey's instructions, tires stretched perfectly and I presume....as they should.

Both wheels are set aside, tires are running "hot, straight and true".

That really cleaned up well, nice work. Glad you're pleased, I sure am. I'll throw a pic somewhere once I have time to clean-up the frame pump.

Funny - my new project has a mix of Campy and Suntour derailleurs... Enjoy - you must be close.

this looks great!

I have to ask, what technique are you using on the rims? Your rims look really fantastic.

Mine are pretty haggard, but they're completely true and the Maillard hubs roll great, but wow, if I could get them to look anywhere near as clean as yours I'd be elated.

What I'm working with:

http://c1.staticflickr.com/1/329/199...592ed563_z.jpg

I'm just about done with the spokes (wire wheel and drill, then steel wool), but I'm at a loss on the rim.

I also purchased some Servizio Corsa tubulars from Yellow Jersey because I've never done tubulars before and don't want to break the bank. I am cheating and using Tufo tape instead of glue. I'm looking forward to hearing how this gorgeous Colnago rides.

I used Mothers the whole way. My knuckles ached by time I got through it. For buffing, grab a cotton sock and run it through the spokes and pull it back and forth. Yours will look sweet in a short time. Those will clean up nice. You may have to use a dremel to reach in near the spokes. What I started with was a set that had never been cleaned. The bike was raced hard in '78 and never rode again. This is my first bike on tubulars and that is part of my amazement. This thing just glides. The Servizio Corse's are working well. I love the ride, it's hard staying off the bike.

OldsCOOL 08-06-15 07:31 PM

Finished for now. Still have a few things I want to upgrade that can wait. This is a hardcore racer that took it's rider to a state record in '78 and pretty much put away afterward. The owner built the bike from a frameset while he was in his senior year of highschool. I had kept an eye on the bike over the course of 4 years. Thank you for following along over the past month during the restoration. :)
