Just to add to the magic and intrigue of this (or any) Colnago restoration, the original owner has sent me his documents on the build. It is very interesting reading of what he put into the total project. The frame is listed at the top. You'll love those 77/78 prices.

Here is one of the receipts from Bike Warehouse in Middletown, Ohio.

How cool is that? I wish I had documentation on any one of my bikes. I don't even think I have paper on the Davidson frame that was custom-built for me.

A special treat, for sure. I really liked seeing the Superleggero pedals on both documents. I'll be framing these for the bike room. :)

Really enjoying your story and progress. Neato seeing that receipt. Do I see some Suntour goodies in there?

Have to say, collectors today of this era Colnago, seem to 'have' this complete devotion and only Campagnolo equiped. However, when I had mine and originally built, I spec'd Superbe derailleurs, hubs and crank but with Campy / Colnago pantograph levers, headset. They were light and simply worked far better. I wasn't alone in my choice either, quite the trend back then. The shop who assembled it from new was changing out others bikes having N.Record.

I did however go with Campagnolo in the seatpost, Cinelli / Colnago panto autograph script stem. One regret was being a follower of the Modolo Equipe brakes. They must have been in some marketing drive, lots of pro racers had them back when. Lightweight but not quite the standard in being high performance.

(My Viner in the werks is going to have Suntour.)

The owner as a teen racer knew the trend, too. He ordered the 1 gen Cyclone. On paper, significantly lighter. When I first laid eyes on the bike I must have shown some puzzlement when looking at the RD. He remarked the Cyclone was lighter and shifted much better than the NR. So, I went on a quest here to find a '76 NR derailleur. Snagged one from Sir_Name in a trade. He said he found it in Italy. I was greatly relieved to have a "numbers matching" Campy-laden Italian beauty.

You had Modolo Equipe' brakes on yours? Now that is a bit unusual. I have those on my '86 Trek 760. I read those calipers were a an almost exact copy of the pro line model. I like them and the styling fits the 760.

Great stuff, really neat to have the paper work behind it. How's the ridding been? I hope to start ridding mine a bunch again.

Really have had some fun rides, one was a fast 16 with hills. That 42/21 low is pretty stout.

This thread has inspired me to break out the Super. Sweet ride with tubulars!

I've spent most of the summer, what little I've ridden this year, riding the DeRosa. She stole me away from the others. :D

So my friend and classic bike lover drops off a birthday present tonight. He says hold out your hand and drops me a pair of Campy dustcaps for the Colnago crankset. Too cool. We share a lot of parts and stuff but I never expected that.

Didn't know you were looking, but good that you now have a pair. Btw, you should post some more pics of the full bike just because :)

Ride impressions, I need to make a few comments. The first ride was unforgettable. The Servizio Corse tubulars were prestretched and inflated so tightly it begged for a ride. Just a one lapper around the block (even with unglued tires) revealed how light a bigger bike can be. These tires perform well at 130-135psi, noticeably quicker even for a "heavier" wheelset and tires. There is another 1lb or more that could easily be shaved off the 21.5lbs weight.

The 42/52 and 15-21 FW makes for a challenging ride if a lot of hills and starts are in the ride. I rode a 16mi personal TT course that has 5-6 hills out and 5-6 coming back. I strava'd the course to keep me fired up. There were moments of going up hills where cadence went out the window (!) but hey I was riding a bike with race heritage. The Columbus SL frame tubing did not flex noticeably though this course is not a sprint where I would more readily notice flex. What I did notice was the comfortably translated speed....fast as silk. Strava time? I was within a minute of a PR set on my '88 Cannondale Criterium Series with racing wheels.

Most nights of the week and on rest days were on this bike. I love the ride and still have a hard time believing I have it after 4yrs of waiting.

Sir_Name 10-20-15 07:33 PM

I forgot about how long your wait was for this. Bet it makes it that much more special to enjoy - even pushing it out of the house before the next ride begins.

When I heard about it sitting idle after his state record race, I asked his sister if he would consider selling it. Of course, not being able to see him directly probably didnt help any deal. His reply was "I wouldnt sell the frameset for 1200.00." This was 4yrs ago. Then this past May I facebooked him and the process began. He doesnt ride anymore but still enjoys being in our public group on FB "Ryp's Classic Bicycles".

We are having temps in the 60's and with a jaunt downtown to visit the Farmers Market I thought to snap a few quick pics in the front yard. Maybe the last ride of the year for the Super.

I have to ask, what technique are you using on the rims? Your rims look really fantastic.

Mine are pretty haggard, but they're completely true and the Maillard hubs roll great, but wow, if I could get them to look anywhere near as clean as yours I'd be elated.

What I'm working with:

http://c1.staticflickr.com/1/329/199...592ed563_z.jpg

I'm just about done with the spokes (wire wheel and drill, then steel wool), but I'm at a loss on the rim.

I also purchased some Servizio Corsa tubulars from Yellow Jersey because I've never done tubulars before and don't want to break the bank. I am cheating and using Tufo tape instead of glue. I'm looking forward to hearing how this gorgeous Colnago rides.

carbomb how did those rims turn out? Are they gleaming in the sunshine?

OldsCOOL - one of them got there... almost. It was polished within an inch of its life and looks fantastic, except the spokes and nipples were just so corroded together that when a Campagnolo Record Crono wheelset came up in fantastic condition for 50 bucks I leaped and put the Servizio Corsa tires on them. The bike is about a week away from being done so expect some pictures shortly =) I still want to finish the old wheelset, but it's going to take some form of a rust removing bath, Kroil, and time to free all the nipples up safely.

That Mother's Aluminum Polish ... holy crap... magic, just magic. It made polishing actually fun because the results were so easy to get.

What's your plans with this?

Any more info on the Marinoni Frame??

Excellent progress! And a Campy wheelset? Cool stuff. I have Campy NR chainsets on two bikes that were cloudy until I got after it with a buffing wheel and Mothers. Love the shine. I'll be looking forward to seeing your bike!
