That looks like a monster gear you're pushing if it's 52T in front and something like an 18T or even a 20T in back. Your Shimano hub's internal gearing might be geared differently from a Sturmey-Archer but I'm using a 48T front and a 24T rear. I'd rather spin than mash.

I rather like the gearing. It is quite good. i live in a delta that is flat for miles and usually has a prevailing wind. I have no trouble riding into the wind and lots of fun riding with it. the reason I did the conversion was that the front fork was bent and the 27" wheels were used on another project. so I put a new fork on for these 26" wheels and the spare wheel set I had in the work shed. then all new brakes and cables plus the higher handle bars and I removed the smaller chain ring and put on a new chain.

Gearing, it would seem, is site specific. Guy at work has a Colnago he bought while in college at Michigan State. It had a corncob freewheel-if you're riding in Central Michigan, you need gears to warm up, no wind, tail wind, and wind in your face, and a county line sprint gear just in case.
He move here (Portland) several years ago and hasn't ridden much. He sometimes breaks 3 hours in a marathon, so he's in shape, but is having a lot of trouble with the hills and mountains here. I found him a 13-28 freewheel to replace his 13-18 Florida style.
Got a six pack of microbrew for the finders fee and swapping out the freewheel for him.

Nice conversion - you don't often see Shimano 3-speeds anymore. What size wheels are they - 26x1 3/8 or ? I agree with [MENTION=399166]thumpism[/MENTION] - my conversion uses 42x20 on an AW hub and I like it, but gearing is pretty much a matter of opinion - if you like yours then more power to you (literally!)....

Not being into super-high gears, I used my Sturmey-Archer AW hub (standard 0.75, 1.0, 1.33 ratios) and 14-16-18-20 Cyclo hybrid conversion cogset with a 40T chainring, which gave me 39 to 99 gear-inches on 26" wheels.
