There is obviously an appreciation on this forum for the bicycles of a bygone era. Whether that arises from the mere fact that something is old, or appreciation of a tried-and-true mechanical system (DT friction shifters, AW hubs, etc.), or aesthetics or whatever, the appeal is there.

My question to you is: Does the C&V bug only bite you relative to bikes, or in other pursuits as well? And if you're a multi- level C&Ver, do the other interests dovetail with cycling, or are they independent?

In my case, I'm a C&V addict when it comes to photography. I still use film. I prefer fully manual SLRs, and my brand of choice is Pentax. Most folks don't get it, but I don't really mind. The only connection to my bikes is that when I ride, I usually take an old Pentax along for the ride.

For the record, if I had the budget, I'd be heavily involved in pre-war Martin guitars, but jeez...

So what's your (other) poison? Classic cars? Audio? Mongolian folk art?

I accumulate old stuff. Camping stoves, camping lanterns, typewriters, sewing machines, kitchen gadgets, farm equipment, etc.

Some may come and some may go, but there is always some that stays around a while.

Actually other than steel bicycles with DT shifters.... I a very modern in every way (except my age and my taste in women).

My last car. It was magic. My current (low miles, stock) MK3 Swift GTI is better on paper, but the ride doesn't even come close.

I have a bit of nice old stereo equipment too but i'm pretty useless in terms of repairing it. My soldering game is not good.

I have my great grandfathers scythe to restore (it is so cool), ill post some pics when I get it out of storage.

wahoonc, I have an appreciation for old manual typewriters myself. I don't collect them, but I have hunt-and-pecked the occasional epistle on an old Remington (or Remington-Rand, maybe).

mattk42, how old is the music you're talking about? Turn of the last century? 1940's? '60's?

Soody, when I was growing up, my grandfather's scythe hung in a storage building in our back yard. I don't know what happened to it, but I wish I did.

I hope you didn't have designs on actually using it. Shockingly hard work. I tend to keep old farm related books around. Most were given to me by my father, from his grandfather, but I also have a few of my own. I found a book, in Spanish, on raising chickens, in a second hand store in Merida.

Seedsbelize, I used that scythe exactly once, according to the instructions of my dad. That experience made me a died-in-the-wool proponent of modern agricultural methods.

5. Rock Albums Vinyl and CD(they are now CV too)
6. Vintage tools (mostly snap-on and Mac)

10. I had a nice run with sewing machines but recently got rid of them all.

72Paramount, it takes me about 16 seconds to get over rude internet comments. (Which, unfortunately, is about 4 seconds longer than it usually takes to type a snarky reply.)

Two things: the rock on vinyl...'60's? '70's? Newer? And, vintage sneakers? That's a first for me. Stans? Chucks? Older? PF Flyers?

The rock vinyl is primarily late 60's early 70's. I have every first pressing of the Beatles, The Doors, Led Zeppilin, The Kinks, Black Sabbath.... The shoe collection is mostly from the 80's and is mostly NOS type as I don't collect old stinky shoes. Before Nike took the world by Storm, shoes like "BROOKS"(used by Dominique Wilkins, Adidas used by Dr.J ...... Unusual super high Hi-Tops are what I like the most. Chucks and PF flyers don't excite me much as they are still being produced in a similar fashion to the originals. I played a lot of basketball bitd and trust me you always want the shoes that the pros had��

Music, yes, all the above, in between, and some after. Most genres from the last century suit my fancy. I am mostly into most forms of jazz. I don't listen to much hard bop or avant-garde. I used to listen to mostly big band, but I've been listening to more modal and cool jazz (Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Dave Brubeck, and earlier Coltrane).

I collect vintage ham radio equipment, mostly from the thirties, forties, fifties, and sixties. Transmitters, receivers, and accessories for the most part, and all vacuum tube "boat anchors"...

Lol no way . Its purpose is to extend my Halloween oeuvre beyond playing thriller on repeat. I do use a lawnmower with no motor though. That thing works great.

Baseball cards. Really old ones.

I grew up with a Hallicrafters Ham/Shortwave. Fond memories of VOA broadcasts. One night I listened to Castro ripping on Nixon and the devil of a capitalistic USA.

I tie classic Atlantic salmon flies with vintage tinsels on vintage hooks. And use vintage Hardy reels for steelhead and salmon fishing.
Here are some examples. I like to fish in the old way with old gear and old flies as much as i like riding a bicycle thats a decade older than me.


All of these reels are older than me, by at least 15 years!

I love Porsche 911's. I have had a passion for them since I was a child. Can you believe I have over 200,000k miles on this car! The best and most reliable care I've owned. Sadly, gets drive only 3-4 times a year these days.
