Thanks Neal, it's looking better once I started hanging parts on it. Had I known we had some more warm days left this month I wouldn't have rushed it. I tried to get it all done last weekend because I thought it was my last chance to spray outside. I'm not impressed with the Rustoleum Acrylic Enamel paint I used either. The nozzle is hard to control and it tends to splatter. Also this orange metallic is very transparent and the color looks lighter or darker depending on how heavy it goes on. That's tough to control around the lugs. I had much better results with the Duplicolor lacquer I used on the Merckx. Lesson learned.

Bikes: Lots of English 3-speeds, a couple of old road bikes, 3 mountain bikes, 1 hybrid, and a couple of mash-ups
My entry is done. I still need to tally the cost, since so much of it is subjective. Here is what I have so far:
1. MASA 12 complete bike - $0 (pulled from a dumpster)
2. Steel 26" wheels with S/A S3C rear hub - $0 (trade for 27" wheels, derailleurs, & shifters that were on the bike originally)
3. Seat post and clamp - $0 (were on the bike)
4. Bars and stem - $0 - (were on a Columbia 10 speed pulled from the same dumpster)
5. Steel cottered 10 speed crankset - $? - (came from my parts stash, I don't know how to value)
6.S/A shifter, cable, and clamp - $5.00 - (from LBS)
7.S/A pulley - $2.50 - (pulled from stash, LBS sold me a replacement for $2.50)
8. Front BMX brake - $1.50 - ( half of a $3.00 set at a bike swap, BTW the cables and housings are recycled)
9. No-name front brake lever - $0 - (it was a on the frame above for the front brake)
10. Tubes - $8 - (LBS)
11. Tires - $24 - (LBS)
12. Saddle - $2 - (part of a $20 Raleigh I bought a while back)
13. Pedals - $5 - (nearly new take-offs from a Raleigh mountain bike I sold earlier)
14. Chain - $8 - (LBS)
So far that tallies to about $62.00 by the calculator in my head.
I must say however, that the S/A S3C hub is as problematic as I have read. I put 12 miles in today - mostly in first gear, sometimes in third, but sometimes second gear would show up for a few seconds whether you wanted it or not. The coaster brake worked well - much better than the front BMX cheapo.
So here is my entry:

I'd like to call it a "Path Racer", but after 12 miles, a "Path Pacer" may be the name.

Only 7 more miles today. The weather was nice and the hub was hell, so now I am up to 74 miles. I think that the fault is mine. The dropout width on the frame is a bit larger than the non-rotation washers on the axle. I am thinking that the movement may be adjusting the hub while riding. BTW - the hub is an S3C.

I'm still not sure about this. The rules are a little.....confusing.
OK, for $50 I bought a complete, nothing wrong with 1995 Trek 820. So I just ride it 50 miles to negate what I spent then post photos? Heck, I've already ridden that far on it. So that's it? I'm done?
Please advise.

Rules from p.1
As for whether you're "done" - that's kinda debatable. I'm planning to keep riding even after I hit zero.
- Target: $0 build (not strict, but...)
- You can achieve this by either free acquisitions, or riding, with subtracting $1 per mile ridden for over 20F, or $2 per mile ridden for under 20F (or in significant snow/ice conditions at any temperature).
- Parts acquisitions can be any time, but the primary build and all mileage has to occur between November 16, 2015 and February 29, 2016, with all entries and miles due on February 29.
- Only mileage after approximately 90% of project completion is allowed.
. - Classes:
- Best Road
- Best drop bar or butterfly bar Cross/Gavel/650B/Randonneur
- Best MTB/Hybrid
- Best pre-50's styling (single speed, 3 speed, balloon tire, etc). Newer components are allowed if keeping the classic flavor.
- Best Electric
- Best Cargo Build
- Best Tandem
- Best small wheel bike (folding, recumbent, mini velo, etc).
- Anything Goes. Unique, off the wall builds.
. - Unique Frankenbuilds are encouraged.
. - No judges. The final results will be a poll (or several polls) with "people's choice".

I thought I was done with mine, but I took it for a test ride and decided that putting around 100 miles on this thing would be no fun at all, particularly when I'd rather be riding a bike a lot in my relatively scarce riding time this point in the year. Hmm.

Curious? Is this still a thing, and if so I have a couple questions...
What about when bikes are given free? In my case F/F and headset were free as they came as one bike, the wheelset came off another freebie bike, as did the cranks and pedals.. the stem and seatpost came off a mixte I paid $5 for, the chain was literally cobbled together from scraps leftover from other single speed builds. The tires have been in my pile for over a year.. IIRC correctly at the time I got them for $10 each and then used them for about half a year, does this lower their value?

overthinking the rules really. feel free to do anything you want as long as you try to do it cheaply. then there will be a poll and the people will decide if they like it or not. some of that will be back story on how it all came together- so taking an old rusty frame out of a ditch and scrounging parts and paint will probably get you more props then "I found this perfectly usable bike in the thrift shop for $10 then rode it 10 miles home".
on the other hand, awesome thrift shopping does deserve shop props, so enter it!
and for counting up the cost, just put in the description things like: "wheels i got off a bike i bought for $10, I consider them about 30% of the value of that purchase, so lets call it $3.33"

A low value bike that was received free from cleaning out a friend's, family, neighbor's garage, or perhaps trash salvage would retain its $0 status, as would all of its parts.
Ambiguity might come in with a high value bike that was gifted to you, and that would be up to your discretion, also considering the restoration efforts.
==================
The "contest" is still on. But, the goal is still to have fun with the project. My projects have fallen behind schedule, and may not be completed.
Send a PM to me, and I'll respond with my e-mail address, with entries due February 29/March 1.
Send before/after photos, cost breakdown, and a brief paragraph about the project. Oh, and mileage.

Here is my entry
85 Gazelle I picked up for $50
As I got it

It had a 27" rear wheel with a strap brake and a single speed. The front wheel was a whitworth rim in 28 x 1 1/4 or 622 ERTO and that cool old SA drum brake
The chain ring was bent, the fenders were hammered and bent, the pedals, headset, bottom bracket had no grease, and the seat post and stem were just stuck but came out ok with some grunts and groans.
here is mock up with some 27" single speed rims but i would have had to drill the fork and brake bridge for brakes

Here is what I ended up with

Bike $50
Seat take off from another old bike $0
Wheels;
Rims pair of 635 chrome steel from Ebay $35
Spokes & nipples from LBS here in Cambodia $10
Schwalbe tires Ebay $45
tubes $8
Sram 2 speed rear hub from Ebay $61
Crank, Chain ring and pedals from The Common Wheel coop in Lancaster PA. $16
SS chain LBS here in Cambodia, $6
Seat post broke it on my Mt Bike and filed the insert end smooth $0
Total $231
Total km ridden 35

No minimum mileage.
We're encouraging 1 mile per dollar spent.
Send me a PM and I'll reply with my e-mail for the entry by Feb 29/March 1.

I've been following and paricipating off to the side since the first of January. Introducing, "Project Patina" my '76 Fuji "The Finest" that cost ZERO dollars. Nothing but trades and generous friends that helped with the more individual parts (seat post, handlebar). It's now ready for the late snow to melt.
