Where are all the high-end old Fujis?

I ride an America that I'm absolutely in love with, but when I look on Craigslist/Ebay/on campus/at the coffee shop/etc. I hardly ever see anything nice r than their middle-of-the-road models, like Sagres or Clubs. I don't think I've ever seen a Professional, Opus, Newest, etc., for sale or otherwise. Is this just a coincidence, or are they legitimately super rare? If they're rare, why?

Yeah, I hardly ever see them on CL down here in Southern California either. Which is a shame since they made some nice bikes.

I've wanted to find an early The Ace for a long time. It's like they are mythical or something.

I have '72 Finest and a '74 Ace. 23" and 24" respectively. I need to sell one or the other... too many bikes.

I've owned an early 70s Finest, a Touring Series III, a Newest, and an Opus. The first two were CL finds, the third a frameset on eBay (it was stripped of paint, so it was sold as a mystery frame), and the last I bought from someone else who found it on CL. So they're out there--you gotta be vigilant.

Vintage bikes are getting harder to find in general, not just Fujis.

I've had an 85 Team Fuji. And I know where there is at least one 1975 Ace.

I can appreciate that, but at the same time if you do an ebay search for say, vintage Colnagos you get tons of nice ones, do the same for vintage Fujis and it's all S12S or S10S, with *one* early-model America.
@Murray Missile that Fuji Team definitely counts! Get 'er rolling.

Man I would kill to find something like this though:

where are all the high-end fujis?

great question. i don't think i've ever seen a '70s fuji above the team model on seattle craigs.

and, for that matter, i've never seen a high-end univega -- like one with campy, d.a., or superbe.

maybe these bikes are parted out and/or listed on ebay where i don't often search.

My guess is that people who were in the market for high-end bikes were more likely to buy Italian or French than Japanese, despite the Japanese bikes being better (/troll).

I've seen one high end Univega equipped with a full Superbe group, but nothing else since. You might be right about them being parted out, especially the less recognizable brands.

I don't think people valued high end Japanese bikes as much as say Italian bikes. Maybe that's why they haven't survived.

+1

The top of the line bikes from the volume oriented producers are scarce in general. Paramount, PX10, International, Le Champion, RB-1, Team Miyata, DX5000 are all scarce.

I saw fewer "desirable" vintage bikes on CL this year. I was able to jump quick enough, and was also willing to over-pay enough, to get 2 bikes I liked. Not that I really worked that hard. But I did a LOT of searching... and very little buying.

Seems to be a huge amount of children's and not-too-new big box store mountain bikes with grip-shifters.

There was a late 80's or very early 90's Ace that was languishing here on the local CL. Decent full Suntour group and Ishiwata Feather tubing. It's either gone or expired at the moment.
