I've got tickets to see a performance Brahm's 1st Symphony this Saturday. Really looking forward to it, as the guest violin soloist is supposed to be great.

I've not seen this piece performed live before, but heard several recordings, and it's a good one. Brahms really struggled with it, and it took him 14 years to complete. He wrestled with his reputation as Beethoven's "successor" in the musical public and how to live up to that legacy and pressure. His 1st Symphony is often jokingly referred to as "Beethoven's 10th," but I think that sells Brahms a little short. The opening movement has a great Bach-inspired counterpoint vibe, something Beethoven would never have tried.

I don't have many interesting pics of late. But my wife does. She just returned from hosting ten key opinion leaders from China, in Kenya. She is working on the ivory poaching issue. Anyway, of course, they went on a couple of field trips. My wife didn't take these as she only had her cell phone for a camera, and a small set of binocs with her. But she hired a Chinese photog to come with them. I don't have his permission to use these, but I do have my wife's, so I think it'll be OK. She was pretty excited to see these magnificent animals.

I know several people who are into bikes and also software and Linux as I am. I know plenty of people who are into bikes and choral music as I am. Ere are plenty of people who are into music and software at the same time. But I don't know anyone other person who is a choral singing software professional who is also into bikes. I wonder why that is and if it says anything.

I'm sure it says something, Tom. But I'll be damned if I know what that might be.

One of my hobbies is scoffing at pretentious blogs that list "best beers" where 80%+ are porters or stouts. I prefer to leave the drinking of mud to others.

Hmm, this got me thinking. (I know, that's a dangerous thing.) Running and cycling are sports. Chess is an intellectual pursuit. I have one sport, one art, and one intellectual thing. Is that a rare combination?
