I grew up on cutting edge mountain bikes and have learned when to just hand the thing over to the pros.
LOL... I even take my old Marzocchi forks in to get work done on them.

In all honesty, I never expect anyone to keep up on old technology.

Bikes: too many

i walked past a newly opened bike shop (the kind with cargo bikes and Pedersens), went inside and asked if they happened to have shiftercables compatible with Campagnolo. That earned me a puzzled look from the clerk, who then mumbled... "I think i'd have to order that... what was that again...? "Capanola....?"

Bikes: Peugeot Course, Motobecane Super Mirage(RIP), Peugeot PKN10e Motobecane Grand Touring

Was out on a club ride last weekend.
A woman approached me with my Motobecane,
and said "I had one just like that,
but I needed some lower gears than the ten speed".

When I showed her how I had the crank tripilzed, she looked shocked.

"The bike shop said they couldn't do that.
That's the only reason I bought a new bike".

poprad, what you say makes perfect sense, and most of us are aware of it. The funny part is that many of us have been around for a while and have had this knowledge for a long time so it seems like easy stuff. We need reminders of how old our knowledge -- and we -- are.

Rocky Gravol, we can't expect bike shops to know that's possible, and even if they do, it's not profitable for them.

I do a good line of business with that attitude from the LBS in my area. Customer goes in with their old Moto/Schwinn/Gitane/Raleigh/Miyata/whatever. LBS does a cost-benefit analyses and goes for the new bike sale. Customer is shocked at price and walks. Walks into my big box and looks at the sub-entry level hybirds I have in their price range. We get to talking, and I point out I can keep them on their old beloved bike for about half the price of the hybird. Big box doesn't make a lot on these, but it keeps me busy and, more importantly, interested.
