My 86 Trek 760 with Campy NR drivetrain came with a Shimano (SIS) 13-26. It now wears a 14-28 with no issues. The 13-26 is a backup for the 15-21 on the Colnago. There are times I like to run the rollercoaster hills we have in good supply locally and be able to top them with this classic bike. In all vanity, that tiny corncob 15-21 just belongs.

I've always messed around with freewheel cogs, I'm still running freewheels on 2 bikes. I have a 12-30 Sachs freewheel that went to 12-32 and the 13-32 (thanks goes to pastorbob for the 13t and 15t). That is easy stuff. I'm more proud of the drivetrain setup of 7 speed Dura Ace shifters indexed to an XTR M910 RD to the Sachs freewheel. It shifts smooth and fast.

My better story is figuring out how to take apart the lockring off a cheap Sunrace 7 speed freewheel so I can run the no-longer-availabe 30t when the freewheel body goes belly up. There is no tool available, even per Sunrace, to remove the lockring. I got a 15/16" socket from Home Depot and cut, filed, and ground it to fit the tabs. It looks like this...

With a 13-25 7 speed Sunrace freewheel I can build a 13-15-17-19-21-25-30 hyperglide freewheel by removing the 23t and adding the 30t. There are probably people who would love to be able to keep running a Sunrace 7 speed freewheel with a 30t when the body goes bad and this is how you do it.

Not exactly C&V but freewheel oriented. I picked up a 2010 Langster Steel for a song. It didn't have a wheels so I used my inventory. I picked a set of wheels with HF Record hubs (C&V from 1973) in 36 hole, with Sun rims. Did I move the rim or move the hub to change the dish? Yeah 4 times before I was able to get the chain line right. I kept trying to use a digital caliper to determine the spacing. Final solution was to use a 18" rule up against the chain ring and measure the distance to the freewheel.

It was easier for me to change the dish than order a flip flop hub and spokes and rim. I wanted to keep the cost down. Ordered a Shimano 16t freewheel. Didn't realize I had to order a removal tool that only Shimano makes and pay as much for it as the freewheel!

If I like the bike, I will keep it. If not, I will sell the F/F. Gotta have pics!:)

I was in my old LBS yesterday and got handed a wheel to check out. No pics but had my interest. The freewheel was a TDC made in England product. Did not know they made freewheels, just headsets.

It spun poorly so must have had s hard life. Looked like a 14-24 spread on it. Spoke protector was a SA pie plate and the hub was a nice "Normandy" made in France (no date).

Anyway, that's my polite free hub story, TDC.

Oh yea, I got the hub.

TDC also made track cogs and bottom brackets, among other things. They're still around, but no longer make bicycle components, now they make industrial gears and conveyor systems.

Another freewheel story some may find amusing. I am the only guy I know who, instead of converting a road bike to fixed gear, converted a track bike into a road bike with a 4-speed derailleur transmission.

1. Receive old inch-pitch Swedish Avanti track bike as wedding present from wife's brother.

2. Drill brake bolt hole in fork crown, add front brake.

3. Add matching rear brake, using existing hole in rear seat stay bridge.

4. Grind and machine a SunTour derailleur hanging claw for backward (rear-facing slot) mounting.

5. Remove inch pitch chain

6. Add drive side downtube shift lever, SunTour V derailleur, 3/8" x 1/2" standard 5-speed road chain

7. Purchase 13-15-18-21-24 Regina freewheel and remove 13T cog, which projects past the body

8. Adjust rear wheel dish and spacing to accommodate resulting 4-speed Regina freewheel, spread rear triangle from 110mm to 114mm OLD.

Purists will flame me for this, but the end product was lightweight and kind of fun to ride, at least for short trips. The ride was harsh, and the steering was quick/twitchy, of course.

BSC threading? Even my Peugeot doesn't speak French (BSC Normandy Luxe Competition hub).
