Why do spiders get all crystalized like this?

More a basement thing than a bike thing but all my bikes live in the basement and I sometimes find these with my bikes. You guys have any ideas?

I'm sure it's OT for C&V bikes. You need to take it over to Spiderforums.net.

spiders molt - shed their skins so its probably just means there is a larger spider alive nearby.

Hah! I saw this same thing in a basement last week. Freaky looking fungus, some die a slow death and will still move with the white coating.

Personally, I'd rather have one live spider than twenty (or more) live flies or mosquitoes.

I'm so glad right now I don't have a basement.

They are known as "house spiders", that's what my pest control friend calls them. The fungus attacks them and they die a slow death.

We have "daddy long legs" that sometimes come into basements that are real long legged like that. Other indoor spiders are little brown jobbers that don't bite. I usually pick them up and deposit them outside. Just haven't seen any as long as in the photo.

that is a nasty fungus. not heard of that.. thought it was just a shell. daddy long legs are good for your basement- they eat black widows.

This guy wasn't as big as the picture. It's just a real close up shot. More or less daddy long leg sized.
Ever watch two daddy long legs get in a fight? Funny as heck, bobbing and weaving.

As soon as it gets cold they find their way into my bike closet in the shop. Had 29 on the wall last winter.

I thought the same. I have a set of Shimano 105 cranks that have a "spidering" oxidation that cannot be removed.

This whole spider thing is definitely a shimano problem.... I have yet to see a Campyphile with spiders in their basement.
