Bike Identification - help!

Hi everyone,

New guy here. I bought a 1974 Schwinn Voyageur II a few years ago strictly as a commuting tool to avoid DC traffic. After commuting 20 miles a day, I fell in love with it and cycling. Anyways, I recently decided to find an old bike and restore it. I posted an add on Facebook and some nice lady told me she a road bike in storage. I picked it up for 20 dollar without knowing what it was going to be. It ended up being a Univega. That's all i know. Does anyone know the model and year? Any info would be great!

Thanks!

Hello Badmitten,

Welcome to the forum. Very nice bike you found.

Those top mount shift levers are a big clue for dating as they were only popular for a short span about 1982-83.

The Univega experts will be along momentarily with more and better information on your find.

Bikes: Waterford Paramount Touring, Raleigh Sports 3-speeds in M23 & L23, Schwinn Cimarron oddball build, Marin Palisades Trail dropbar conversion, Nishiki Cresta GT, Jeunet mixte

It's got the crank reducers that permit you to use "normal" pedals instead of the original Dyna Drive drop-center pedals, and someone swapped out the original aero stem. Probably about '82.

Thanks for the replies. The more I look at this thing as it sits in my living room, the more Inwish it was my size. Is this the sort of bike I could sell for some
Profit to find a bike that fits me? Again, total newbie here. I haven't even gotten a proper fitting.

Bikes: Indeed!

Put it in the "frame doesn't fit" sticky thread and see what someone offers in trade...
Better know what size bike you want first.

I believe I would need a 22in/55cm or so. My Voyageur II fits well, but it's currently getting some work done. What's this bike worth on trade value? Thanks!

Greetings,

Just a suggestion, "what's it worth?" questions are not permitted in the C&V forum.

There's a separate Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries Forum.

One of the Forum Moderators may move this message to that forum....

Good luck.

The subject bicycle appears to be a somewhat modified Univega Superstrada, circa 1983. However, the serial number will tell us the exact year.

Well, it was built in 1983 but that is a very high number, which would normally indicate a 1984 model built in late 1983. However, 1984 catalogue lists the Superstrada only in Gunmetal Grey.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. The model name seems to be rubbed off. Frame is in great shape, but there are numerous scratches and rubs that go down to bare metal. Thinking about stripping it down to bare metal and starting over...
