The shifting on the Colnago was a little sloppy in a couple gears, so I had a quick look at the cable housing to the RD... and there was no housing end cap at the end going into the RD. Yikes. How did I overlook this the last time I changed out the cable and housing? Should be a bit better now.

Been doing some work at our new shop getting it ready for our first work day . We have been throwing away a lot of marginal parts and bikes due to having to store everything indoors. At our old location almost all the bikes were stored outside , usually a couple hundred at a time. Now our new lease specifically prohibits our storing ANYTHING outdoors. I just brought about 10 wheels home with me Saturday. Couldn't bear to see them tossed. So now I don't have enough room to store everything.

I built some carts to move parts around in the shop. Everything is in plastic milk crates on commercial shelving and If you need to sort through the box of Seat posts you need to carry the box from the shelf to your work table and that box is HEAVY. The carts are built to just fit the crates and the top of the crate is flush with the work bench . I made them from 3/4" plywood and a Harbour Freight wooden dolly . Total cost of material about $35. each . The carts we found at U line were about $200 each . These are better.

Just finished up a Miyata Trail runner mountain bike I built up from a bare frame that was donated to us by a friend. That is one sweet machine. All Double butted Chrome Moly frame and fork , lugged frame with forged dropouts, integral derailleur hanger and Rear dropout adjuster screws. I weighed the bike ready to ride at 29 lbs. with 26 x 1.75 street tires. It is going to make a killer town bike.

Fuji Team. Went from aero to non aero brakes, new tires, new cables, cleaned and lubricated. New higher stem and new bar tape is on its way, then I can finish up.

Before.

So far.

Updated 86 Ironman

My weekend project. A 1986 Centurion Ironman Expert frameset that had a less than desirable paint job, but was otherwise in excellent condition. In it's new guise it's a compact cranked, Ultegra ten speed, smooth riding, steel is real all day riding restomod.

I've taken almost everything off my 1971 Raleigh Super Course. It's been a very damp and wet year, and it showed me how damp the barn interior is. It's fortuitous timing that I took the bike apart now, because if I had waited another 6 or 12 months, it might have been too late. Every threaded fastener was grimy and corroded and was about to become seized. But since I caught it all in time, some cleaning and lubrication will have them working fine. The barn is in High Falls, NY, the next (colder) climate zone after New York City, so it gets cold at night there. And there is a lot of spider schmutz and other crap floating around.

Gonna give this MTB a going over then ride it. See if I want to keep it.

EDIT: I am so keeping this machine! I will spend the winter looking for rough pavement and side trails to explore.

Wrapping up the overhaul on my Cannondale ST-500. I’m not a fan of the Brooks tape. In my opinion, it’s way too thick and difficult to work with. Now I just need to wait for my cartridge bearings for the Suntour bottom bracket, Schwalbe tubes and new tires.

I can’t wait for better weather!

those are great frames if they fit you. About 15 years ago i bought a kona smoke to get back into cycling. I picked up a single track 930 a year later or so and couldnt believe how much lighter and livlier it was. Sadly i have neither now.

This one is an 18”. The fit as I ride it around today is perfect. Could use a different set of tires but I got that covered already with nice bin tires waiting. The ones on it are in perfect condition and are so stinky light! I thought the thin sided thick tread thing was a modern idea but here these are from 1996.

I figured to start the year, I'd take care of something important on a bike that I normally ride daily: Replacing a blown rear tire on my '74 Raleigh Tourist. Done, and the mechanical juices are now flowing. Next job will be something easy: Cleaning the rims on my Gitane Tour de France and installing new tubulars.

If you decide to ditch it, and want to sell it cheap, let me know. I've got a good project reaching completion that it would be good for.

I am difficult to work with myself, so maybe I'm a good match for that tape

Currently whittling down a Nitto Technomic stem to fit the narrow ID of the Schwinn's steer tube and planning to clean and lace a pair of 1st Gen Phil Wood hubs. These should be great additions to the ride but I don't know which rims to pair up to the Phils. Any suggestions?

Completely agree. Fizik (which also comes in honey brown) looks, feels, and wraps so much better. But those brooks bar end caps are kinda sweet.

Headbadge #078

All the red bands are in great shape.

Sized 57 C-T of toptube. Spot on!
Just received this yesterday. Winter building has started! The paint on this Voyageur is fairly decent, the chrome is spectacular under the grime. Faint rust under the paint in places will be easy to vanquish and cover with gloss black. Thinking a fast fendered all day rider for the build.

Fizik might be changing things. I liked the 2mm micro lite whatever wrap but now it seems thicker, wrinkles around tighter radius. LBS tells me Fizik and Brooks are related or probably produced in the same plant.

I just wapped two bikes with fizik, and I didn't notice any difference in the fizik I've always used.

I've only used the brooks microfiber once, on this bike (below), and I'll never make that mistake again. It's beyond thick, much more difficult to wrap around the lever, and feels almost like I used foam under the tape.

I had a day off today, and a few things I wanted to try out. So I put together this test mule. Test results so far:

1) CLB side-pull calipers are really nice
2) a Gazelle A frame does have enough clearance for fenders
3) old Campagnolo 9-speed ergos do indeed work well with a modern Shimano rear derailleur and a 5-speed FW
4) and the ratcheting mechansim in the left lever works nicely and has a big enough range to cover a triple

All in all a setup that would make a nice lightweight credit card touring machine. For such an application I would change to MAFAC center-pulls, though. Both for looks and the ability to mount one of those nifty mini front racks. And a slightly taller frame.

That's because those were nice tires; Tioga Psycho's were a pretty fast hardpack tire, BITD. Continental's XC / Leader PRO had those translucent sidewalls like you see on their Gatorskin road tires.
People seem to forget that there were once high-end 26" MTB's.
