Question about the Alloy Tange Levin 1500 headset

Does anyone know where I can find a replacement crown race? I've been told that the steel race can fit, that the Campagnolo race would fit as well...I'm just looking for a definitive answer beyond "You've got to buy an entirely new headset," as everything else is in perfect shape.

For reference, I'm speaking about the Levin headset that looks like the old Campagnolo Record headset, with the relief band.

I have a replacement Levin (for steel, not alloy, HS) crownrace that had been available separately from either BikeTools, etc. or may have been another online vendor like LooseScrews.
Not sure if it's 26.4 of 27.0 but check those guys first then if no luck let me know by PM.

One of the bike co-ops in town has both 26.4 and 27.0 crown races to use or sell.

UPDATE: It's biketoolsetc.com and they sell both sizes for the Levin CDS but currently the 27.0 is OOS:
Bike Tools Etc. - 1000's of bicycle tools and parts for the home mechanic!
a mere $3.75 each...

seems like the three of you only found the steel races; i wonder why it's so hard to find the alloy one. maybe the next thing to do is just hold up my race against a steel one, to see if there's a difference...

Call me crazy but shouldn't crown races always be steel?

I'd agree. The only alloy crown races I've seen are for cartridge bearings - where the crown race isn't really a crown race, just centers the bearing.

^I also agree^, and per the OP's first post:
"I've been told that the steel race can fit"
so if you were told the truth, there's your solution...but it's possible that the steel race supplied for the Tange alloy Levin HS is a different dimension to the steel Levin race for the steel HS, but then should also use different bearing cages too, I'd guess.
Let us all know when you find out.

Yes, the Levin series uses caged balls and all of the crown races (even for the alloy set) are steel.

No, they are the same. I recently bought a 26.4 alloy set to fit a current 650B conversion project. The original unicrown fork restricts clearance at the crown so I was able to find a nice vintage fork as a replacement. The new fork is milled to 27.0 so I bought one of the 5 dollar Levin CDS crown races. Other than the inside diameter and the finish (alloy set race was chrome), they are identical.

^nice to hear that the Levin crownraces are interchangeable between some of the different models of Levin headsets, thanks for posting this.

awesome. so just for further clarity, and search engine purposes:

the tange levin alloy 1500 headset uses steel races, which are the same as the steel races found in the steel tange levin headsets.

Both headsets share a common steel crown race. Top/bottom cup bearing races are alloy in alloy headsets and steel in steel headsets.

Almost… upper and lower cups are aluminum, with pressed-in steel races.
