'86 Schwinn Peloton build complete
First, I just want to say I really enjoy gawking at everyone's sweet rides here! Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm and passion for everything C&V related. It never gets old.
It's been a decade or so since I put anything together bike-wise. When I saw a Peloton frame in my size up for auction on the Bay a few months ago, I couldn't resist the call. You know that voice, the one that whispers in your ear and says "make me yours". I've always wanted a Peloton. So now that I have one, it's my turn to share. https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/665/32...f6235a13_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/559/31...5f387889_z.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/766/31...d18e00b5_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/457/31...f36a65dfda.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/563/32...c3d939e6_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/549/31...7b043056a2.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/488/32...b7eba616_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/324/31...b725326760.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/288/31...cc4fcf38_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/541/31...d74fe83aa2.jpg |
That's beautiful.

Gorgeous! You started with only the frame?

Well done man very nice. Love the black & white combination of frame color and component mix. Man the bike is clean all around. This is encouraging to me to attempt something soon.
Question, what kind of seatpost bars and stem is on that? Like that black. (Just figured out the stem is black Nitto Pearl) |
I don't know 80's Schwinns at all, and your bike really surprised me.
Straight out of the catalog! Even has a two-tone chain. http://bikecatalogs.org/SCHWINN/1986...1986Ltwt07.JPG |

(Just figured out the stem is black Nitto Pearl) I originally wanted to install a Sunshine Pro-Am stem, but I discovered that it was the wrong size, so went to plan B, starting with a black Nitto Pearl stem. The other black bits followed. |
Damn, son! That's the best one I've ever seen. This one is absolutely on my list. Good thing I didn't see the auction you got this from, I would likely have been bidding agin' ya! ;)
|
Gotta love Nitto stuff, and it seems like they are still cranking out quality parts. Yeah I got a line on a Peloton myself stock with Superbe. Color isn't always first choice, red, but still might be able to work with it.
BTW for not building a bike in awhile you did a fine job. |

That is a great bike and a great build. I've come across many of the 80's Schwinn models but I have never seen a peloton around here.
How does it ride? |
That is one magnificent Schwinn there, I always liked to look and stance the Peloton presented. You did an excellent job in building this one, kudos on all the work and attention to detail.

Another thing I haven't done in a while is a wheel build. The Mavic wheels in the pics are just temporary. I have some Araya ADX-4 tubular rims, which were stock on the '86, and some NOS Cyclone hubs. I'm also going to build a set of clincher wheels. The Superbe Pro hubs will come off the Mavics, and be laced to a set of period correct Specialized HC-20 rims. The HC-20's were manufactured for Specialized by Mavic based on Mavic's Module E rim IIRC. Now, if I can just locate my spoke wrenches.... |
That's a sweet ride . Nice work.
|
Building the wheels is like a signature on a painting, it made me feel like I had finally completed my Medici back in December. Those wheelsets should make this one a gem.

Nicely done. That stem is great.

Very, very nicely done! Love the black and white theme on the bike. You've done it proud. |
Damn, Son. What a beautiful build!

I really like it and the Suntour Cyclone grupo classic . Not to mention the Clements ! Over the top .
|
Really nice looking bike. Looks quick sitting still!
|
Amazing job on this build! Really well done from top to bottom
I'm a big fan of late 80's, higher end Schwinn stuff and I feel like it doesn't get nearly the credit it deserves. Great riding frames and nice components usually came stock. I've had my hands on an '87 Prelude in Ice Pink, an '88 Tempo in Bold Blue and Star White, and an '87 Super Sport in Magenta and White but more affectionately known as (pepto bismol pink) Wish I had the Super Sport back to be honest. One of my biggest selling regrets. Anyway, really well done! |
I'll just echo what everyone else is saying - beautiful job on a fantastic bike. :)
|
Very pretty, nice work!
