So, this is a first...
Guy buys a nicely polished 80's era Campagnolo seat post from me on eBay. Day he receives it, he requests a refund, because he is certain it's a counterfeit.
I sent him a return mailing label and will happily give him a refund- I mean, who needs an unhappy customer- but that's a first for me. A counterfeit Campagnolo seat post? Really? And based on the shipping address, the buyer (whose name, location and company will be withheld), works for a major bicycle component manufacturing company. Which means, one presumes, he oughta know, right? Must admit I was ready to just discount it as buyer's remorse, but then wondered...anybody ever heard of such a thing? Not trying to start another 'I hate eBay because..." thread, because I really DO like eBay. I buy a lot of stuff there, and sell things from time to time. Just...wondering. |
Did he happen to say why he thought so?

Pegged it right, buyers remorse or they realized they looked for the wrong size.
|
Beauty of a post, great price - couldn't have been buyer's remorse :)
That's a strange one, Doc! DD |
Was it a Fluted Super Record 1 Bolt 27.2 ??

Hard to imagine someone going to the trouble and expense
to counterfeit a seat post. |
I bet the eBay buyer goofed and needed a different size. "Measure twice; bid once..."

I had a similar experience but not bike related. Rather hilarious as the buyer / top bidder claimed to be a lawyer of which doesn't mean squat in my world.
In brief. A limited ed. made in Germany, brand new, complete, in the box + paperwork Schuco Auto-union tin car -perfect original and cherished condition. Buyer signed as received and after a few days I had followed up and thanked him! No feedback yet was posted. The buyer only then replies was so dissatisfied and claimed it was a fake + repainted, even after he checked with his blacklight?? LOL I was quite taken back by the statement and knowing personally acquiring the item direct from the company. Regardless, I offered for him to return it, I'll even absorb all the fees but only reimburse after receiving it and the same condition it was delivered. Buyer became outraged and threatened lawsuit....yada, yada. Too mental beyond further explanation. Of course a record of comm. was with ebay. Anyways, the buyer declined my gracious resolution and kept the item. He also gave me a negative feedback. It was such a longtime ago, but think ebay took care of the neg. feedback. What a nutsack whoever he is. |
Counterfeit - it didn't say Campanola

I am shocked, shocked I say, that an upstanding member of this community would try to hawk fake bike parts on the internet! Have we no standards? Who (aside from OP) would do such a thing?
Okay, I admit, I'd do it. But it's not worth it to me. If I contracted a slave labor prison in Breitbartland to make fake obsolete Campy parts for me, it would cost me more than I could get for them on eBay. |

Did he happen to say why he thought so? I don't know, seemed like your basic C-record era aero-style Campagnolo seatpost to me. I even checked mine against pics on Velobase to make sure I had the model and era correct. Considering I owned and used said seatpost for about a decade before deciding I didn't need it and then polished it up on the new bench buffer my daughter gave me for Christmas, needless to say, I was surprised. Was it a Fluted Super Record 1 Bolt 27.2 ?? What makes these so valuable to you? They seem to be all over the place for $100-135 or so... |

Neal, according to the buyer, because: "Weight, polish, stamping, and cut details are all evidence of this."
