I am going to read your article but wanted to say that I am so happy with the progression in MTb's, from wheels, gearing, frames, tires and especially the availability of trails almost everywhere.
I have an old Trek Antelope 26" rigid frame bike, that I can't imagine riding on the trails anymore, haha

That Joe Breeze mtb in the linked pic is so cool.

Would love to see one in person.

Looks like a fantastic book btw.

Probably should pick up a copy.

Isn't there a forum section for commercial advertisements?

The excerpt on meeting the Dead was wonderful. I'd seen pix of some of the Fisher bikes before, but I never knew the connection was that old nor that deep. We'd have loved reading that in my youth when we used to ride our bikes around western NY before we were old enough to drive to shows.

All of that was going on just a few miles from my and I missed it. I probably wouldn't have participated, but I would have loved to have watched.

You're in Pinole? Somehow the Berkeley Trailers Union boyz found out and took part in the fun.

Great article.
I was in central CA (SanJose&SantaCruz) during these years, but learning to handle the Santa Cruz Mt roads occupied me completely. Later, my son had some good mountain bike mentors in the 90s, i was still stuck on the lonely mountain roads.

Mountain Bike Action. All through the 90's until the early 2000's I subscribed to all the magazines. MBA, Mountain Biking, Bike, Dirt Rag and another one I can't remember. Bought a bunch of the UK ones at the book store as well. I kept every one and had boxes full of them. In 2006 I moved and like an idiot I threw them all away. I could have made a killing on ebay if I had them now.

Fun read.

Looking back, its remarkable how the atb craze destroyed the road bike market. By 1993 its seemed bike shops carried only 20 percent of inventory as road bikes. At least thats how I recall it. I would imagine the atb print publications were just as hot, especially since web presence was nil.

I believe it was 1986 when bikes with big tires first outsold road bikes, barely three years after mass produced mountain bikes first hit the market. The introduction of the mountain bike was the most important development in cycling of the 20th Century.
