Let's see your vintage paintwork

What's the best vintage paintwork you've seen or own?

Not decals, but the actual paint job, including box lining, lug lining, particularly nice color schemes, pantographing, etc.

Blue Riband

Too kick things off, here's mine:

This is a 1946 Hobbs Blue Riband restored by Charles Woodward, a retired coachbuilder. The paintwork is both beautiful and understated, with airbrushed blue-grey swirls and neat lug lining.

That Hobbs sets a pretty high threshold for this thread.

You guys have all seen my Capo frames, one original, one CyclArt. No fancy gold trim or other detail work, though.

(Come to think of it, my first Bianchi, a bottom-of-the-line 1962 Corsa, was all red, with gold outlines on the lugs. My brother's was gold, with red outlines on the lugs. You don't see that level of finish craftsmanship on any bargain basement bikes today.)

I always thought Motobecane did a good job with paint, 1st is my 75 Grand Jubile in original paint, Centurion was good also, Maroon one is a Le Mans I sold when we moved. Blue one is my Centurion Pro Tour. It was a high mileage tourer with worn out hubs/rims but with new wheels it was my main Winter rain bike on my commute for 10 years. Certainly withstood the test of time. Don

I'll follow up with another 1946 Hobbs, and simply say that the box lining - although faded in places - is expertly done on my frame. This particular shot was as originally delivered to me, before clean up and build.

Airbrush should not be used to achieve this result

This is Merz TW189 from 1979 so almost 40 years ago. Not terribly fancy per se, but extremely good quality for the time, very durable as it is Imron and very well done. Jim's wife at the time Virginia Church was his painter so another caveat of a woman in a very important role of the industry. I believe this was a 4 step process that started with hot tanking and a zinc phosphate electro bath of some sort. I read it in an article somewhere, but can't find it now so not sure of specifics. Anyway, it is still very beautiful, no flaking, minimal chips and rust anywhere.

You're all quite right: it's either candle or acetylene smoke. What a nice effect.

The paintwork is not original to Hobbs. It was restored (I've no idea when) by a retired coachbuilder and painter called Charles Woodward. He was an avid collector of vintage bikes, particularly Hobbs of Barbican.

My Allegro, from about 1960, has that effect done to the paint. It's pretty tired now, and for some reason I don't have any good photos... but this gives a taste:

What happened here? Hobbs of Barbican made some cool bikes, would be interested to see what you had posted. Did anyone specifically tell you that the photos you shared were unwelcome? I don't see any sign of that... Not every photo or bike posted in such a thread is going to receive immediate attention, you know.

@hobbs1951 I thought the Allin fit well in this thread on the basis of it being a "particularly nice color scheme" and would like to see it back in the thread. Even better, it would be nice to see that frame built up.

this what was called painting with fire. It's the soot from candle or torch.

That is what I was thinking at the first post. But I have wondered if paint/clear would have fisheye or other adherance issues.
