OK, how about I sell you the rights to use your fancy Italian last name, here in America? 🤔 😉 My father was the first of his Polish family born here, and they "Americanized" our last name, starting with him. If you start making these holders, put me on the buyers list, please. 🙂

I reckon any old touring bike oughta qualify. Especially old Treks, when 3 "normal" bottle cages just isn't enough. 😅

Sure.

But I think most of the world would give you the same reaction if you told them about paying extra for parts with holes in them.

If I had the right bike I would pay that if need be. The handlebar double is one of the most sought after period accessories there is.

I was looking for bikes and came across a NOS set from a guy in Italy a few months back. Just couldn't bring myself to pay the $200 or so without having anything to put on. Still not sure if I should have got it anyway.

And they'd be right if it was crappy stuff by that weird Nazi-collector guy

But honestly? Am I missing something, for real? I get that it's old, but the quality looks terrible and at least one of them is waaay past patina - looks as though it may even have been buried for a time.

I don't get it. Oh, well, kudos to those that do

It ain't about functionality.

It's about being vintage cool.

That and not having to bend over to grab a bottle.

I get the coolness factor. And the vintage factor. But we are asked valuations over in our sub-forum all the time and condition is always uppermost in our responses to queries.

How is it vintage-cool if the condition is terrible? Or is this another one of those "I won't get it because it's vintage French"?

I think it's the latter. I'll hush up now

It's like overspending for a vintage, lesser French constructeur bike...cough, cough

I got these on my latest trip to Gaiole in Chianti. €40 for the cages plus a couple of aluminum bottles at €10 each. Thought it was a fair deal.

(Currently buried in my back yard. )

They are hen's teeth. That is all.

After this thread popped up, I decided to look at Coloral bottle sales. Last I looked, a couple 3 years back, a high price was $100 for a single bottle (but I do remember way back when typical was $40-$60). Now, there were a few over $200.

Well, yes, they are rare as hen's teeth, but I don't think that's quite all. These date to a time when bike frames did not have water bottle braze-ons. Anyone who has a bike that old is probably not going to want to put a steel clamp around the down tube at risk of scratches on the original paint or the pricey repaint so the handlebar is the better option. Likewise, the guy riding a bike that old is probably not going to want to wear a Camelback. Just won't look right.

The best way to get these things is to get a rusty as heck old bike that doesn't fit. If you can find a bike like that, with this bottle cage attached, the whole shebang will cost less than this cage did. I know, not easy to find; but well worth it if you can.

You are correct that something other than bar cages would be inappropriate for most everything prior to 1950. Road bikes from that era are hard to find, many of the accessories even harder to find. If you are going to drop coin on the bike, a couple hundred bucks to finish it off is not surprising to me.

I watched an Ebay auction, years ago, and an identical set to a set that I have went for $650.00 US. The ones I have will be up for grabs as soon as I get back to my bikes. Another two weeks and I will be back at the cottage on the shores of Loon Lake...

I will offer the set on Bike Forums for sale section when I finish my winter travels in a couple of weeks...

I have placed them on the for sale forum, but a fellow member has already expressed interest. You are next in line, Mike but all must sit on hold until I finish my winter travels. Back at the cottage in a week or two.
