Would turn it into a very nice budget touring bike, but not worth the cost for something that's basically going to be neglected. If it fits it should be a great bike, I would be really stoked to ride that.

In Wisconsin I think it is referred to as marital property.

All very true but most dorms do not allow bikes inside so what choice is there? That said, my sons went off to college on some pretty nice vintage bikes (85 Trek 620, Austro-Daimler Inter10, early 70's Frejus). They were all converted to single speeds and I used as many sealed bearing components as I could find for the hubs, BB's etc. Then LOTS of grease in the stem and seat post. They haven't been stolen although a bike I built for a friend of my son's was lent out, then stolen. They may have survived since the finish on all of them was pretty poor. The AD had decent paint but it's just a plain brown and not a well-known brand outside of C+V circles.

I think that 930 will fit the bill perfectly. The average ride will be about 1-2 miles so anything that is reliable, can stand sitting out in the weather and is replaceable is ideal.

My two sons both commute to school from home. One rides a 1989 Fisher rigid mtb while the other rides a 1992 Trek 520 tourer. The Trek is built like a mountain bike with fat 700C tires and heavy-guage tubing. Both have racks and fenders (it rains a lot here during the summer). These bikes get beat on pretty hard but they have lasted several years and are still going strong as ever. From time to time the boys have ridden road bikes with 27x1-1/4" tires, but they both prefer fat tires for urban riding, since they can just plow over anything without worrying about it.

My wife and son are driving back now from orientation at Tech. They report that the campus is indeed enormous and a bicycle will be vital. I think that I have his bike finished and ready to go. Not being able to leave well enough alone, I converted it to SR drop bars on a Sunlite 1 1/8" 2 bolt stem. The bar ends are 8 speed Ultegra which indexes perfectly in the rear and also shifts the front triple nicely. The brake levers are by Tektro and work well with the cantis. I took the Blackburn MTN rack off my Trek 750 and mounted it on this 930. The angle of the rack is not right, but I think it will work. The frame bag holds a nice U-Lock on one side and a beefy cable on the other.

Well done and the U-lock and Cable combo is a must in that kind of setting. Last year my nephew brought his campus bike over for Uncle bike nerd to check on a brake issue - it was a badly out of true front wheel, and a bad canti return spring that I was able to replace out of the parts bin - and when I saw it was a Motiv MTB (Costco/big box brand) my first thought was ewww! quickly followed by wait this is the perfect college bike cheap and easy to replace if stolen and not a theft magnet for any discerning thief. Hope that trek starts a love of biking for your Son, in retrospect I had some class to class hops across campus at Oregon State where having a bike would have been pretty darn useful.
