I get your point but they are the oldest American component manufacturer still in operation.

Besides a little truing of the wheels, no other adjustments or maintenance to be done.

Getting a dirty, filthy, greasy, neglected bike for a "song" on CL and tearing it down/cleaning it up/degreasing it to find that the paint is in MUCH better condition than you had any right to hope.

For me, a perfectly adjusted square taper bottom bracket makes me happy. Clean bearings, new grease. I think it's the smell of the grease that sparks a lot of fond memories of bikes repaired and moved along to people who loved and appreciated them.

Though I love to build and ride my bikes, I am at the top of the "havingfunladder" when I find my new favorite bike. Last year, it was an all chrome Torpado Luxe and this year, so far, a Quintanna Roo. And, if all goes well, a Peugeot PX-10E will come my way before long.

Yesterday, a seventies something Unival road bike came my way for less than a half case of beer. All I really wanted was the Suntour Barcon set, but the bike is proving interesting. I am happy!

Pictures as soon as Mother Nature will permit(burr, pooey-stinko)!

^^^^^^ This. I will add the condition: when it's dry up here!

Also:

When a paint and/or build comes together like you imagined it.
The smell of the old formula of Phil Wood bike grease as it was the stuff I used the first few years starting this whole bike thing.
The sound of a nice vintage freewheel when coasting.
The feel of perfectly adjusted and buttery smooth hubs (7400 Dura Ace) that you just overhauled.

What i love about old bikes is that usually there is nothing really wrong with them. they need grease and some parts may be stuck but almost always they can be brought back to life with nothing more than a few cables and a lot of love.

I got a thrill when I took my first Campi hub apart and saw how beautifully finished the axle and cones were. I was in awe the other day when the custom bike I was cleaning up had a Phil rear hub. I swear when I spun it it took 10 minutes before it came to a stop. love it when everything is back together and I ride it for the first time and see what a great ride it has.

Sometimes I scratch my head when I see a part that is ridiculously over engineered or just plain weird.

And I even love the stone age engineering of the Schwinn Varsity . I think the Ashtabula crank and bottom bracket may be the simplest most bullet proof bit of engineering ever to grace a bicycle.

And last but not least, the Raleigh Sport with it's 3 speed Sturmey Archer transmission that hasn't changed much since the 1920's and its steel wheels that are unbreakable is truely a hundred year bicycle.

They weren't really standard equipment though were they. Don't get me wrong I think they are great. But if your doing a Vintage build Phil Wood Hubs wouldn't really be correct.

Perhaps their use was more limited in other parts of the world but here in California Phil Wood hubs were the hub to have on your touring bike or tandem throughout the seventies. Many of us raced on them as well.
