Stuck out his thumb and pulled out a?

Looking for some recommendations out there. I've got a Motobecane Grand Jubile that I'm setting up as an upright "gentlemen's" bike. Looking to put friction thumb shifters on (2 x 5/6). Any recommendations on what I should be looking for?

One rig I've used and that works well is suntour barcons at the end of an upright bar. When doing this, you must first check if the bars will take the barcons. Most uprights won't. I liked this rig-- you just slide your hand back to shift. Also, a lot of old MTB thumbies will work well-- many can be converted to friction or are already.

Suntour ratcheting thumb shifters work great if you can find them.

SunTour ratchets are indeed a superb choice -- I use them on my UO-8 (drop bars in my case). SunTour thumbies are great, as well -- I use them on my mountain bike.

Bikes: Still a garage full

VO sells downtube adapters if you want to go deluxe, or Falcon thumbies for the economy route. Since most of the hybrids requiring new shifters cost $40 for the entire bike, The $13 Falcons work fine.

I did that exact thing, on my Grand Jubilee using Suntour Barcons...

This is how I did it, although the bike in question is an old Legnano...

Bikes: Too many to list here check my signature.

I used the barends on my Hetchins and I really liked how natural it felt shifting. The only draw back is they eliminate inverse brake levers.

Thanks for the input...good to get different perspectives. Special thanks to randyjawa. I've spent many an evening checking out your site and following your builds. I had forgotten barons. I own a set or two, so perhaps I'll go down that road.
