This has been kicking around the Cleveland Co-op for a while.
1976 Merz Touring. I tried to get some more information about this one but struck out. The bike with a serial number one digit lower was built in July 10th 1976. The components aren't original, well not the derailleurs and the crankset. Derailleurs are from 1984. I didn't look for the crank but I'm assuming it's similar in age. Look at that fork crown!! It's so nice. I wish this was a smaller size. Even for me this would be a stretch. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...83c0095d25.jpg |
Picked these up At the co-op the other day. I haven’t found any other information on this brand aside from someone that found some titanium QR skewers at a swap meet.
Made by “Bunton Precision Machine” this set of titanium “Bunton Bolts” comes with everything you need to titanium-ify your 97 XT or XTR equipped bike, including TI axles! The derailleur mounting bolt is especially nice. If even comes with TI derailleur limit screws, which must shave off several nanograms. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...529b63ae2.jpeg |

He made some from scratch. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...c1e84c5a4.jpeg Wonder whats up with the tape at the crown race above? :foo: |

You rarely see any primarily non off road bikes with a bearing gator. ;) |

I think it is $150 (plus tax). The paint is rough in spots. a lot of the components are Shimano 600/tricolor. it's obviously not complete/ready to ride. i haven't really checked it out too carefully because it is not my size, so no real interest for me. it looks to me to be around 54cm, but again, haven't measured or checked it.
i think it's just kinda been sitting there because of the limited time and staff due to covid, and they'd rather get bikes put together that can be 'quick sales' like kid's bikes, newer road, and mtb. older road stuff, when they have it, seems to stagnate. was tempted on eBay one time for my size. No cool coops near me unfortunately that I know of... |
That YETI!

Our local co-op appears to be on a downhill slide. They moved to a smaller, shared space and just don't get the amount of (interesting) stuff they used to have. Saw these recently and can get more detail if anyone is interested.

Pretty pink Mercier!

Thanks to hazetguy for the pix and follow-up: folks that Giordana is (so sad to say) too big for me and has some odd-ball graphics, BUT it's Excell tubing (assuming decals are legit) so in my book a thoroughbred. I wish It was a tick smaller but I have to pass and SOMEbody should jump on this and grab a deal of the day/month/year!

From their dumpster today; usable 26 alloy QR 7-speed wheels with good Kenda sllcks that are exactly what I was looking for...https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...fb55598a69.jpg
...to use on my knobby tired Marin. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d05b09ea6d.jpg Found a Sturmey-Archer high flange alloy front hub. Never seen one of these. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...88ba5e38fe.jpg Also found a rusty but nearly original Gitane mixte. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...568898c92c.jpg |
Today I found a Cannondale H400 frameset that I've seen hanging up inside for years but they finally tossed it.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...35f1e183f7.jpg At the bottom of the dumpster lies a Schwinn 564 frame with its odd expanding seatpost intact. I can probably get that if anyone needs it. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...6d8bd3ab7f.jpg |
I'll bet that seatpost is seized....

Make or break a bike with that part. |

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a8831d36dd.jpg You can see that the left boss on the fork is slightly bent. Should still be serviceable. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...3af726254d.jpg |
Next to their dumpster today. Mismatched wheels but in better shape than it looks. I'd grab it if I wanted/needed another project or knew someone tall enough to need it. Would make a good drop bar conversion for touring.

I found this pair of hubs at my local co-op. Older model of Sunshine hubs and a great case of Campy copy. They were pretty dirty as the pics will show, but cleaned up quite nicely without need for any refurbishing of bearing races. They had Campy grease in them and spin smoothly. Pics:
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...6b7a3935f1.jpg Left is after cleaning and right is before. Note the chrome lock nuts, a nice touch. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...edcddcba94.jpg Another after and before showing the dirt that came off the hubs. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...8b6482b6b4.jpg Hub shell and inner parts, clean and no pits or damage! https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...acd799f0d7.jpg Close up of cones and axle and how nice they are for a less costly set back in the day. This is again a great pick up from the co-op. Cost was Zero but will be worth a lot to a rebuild of a vintage bike or collector. Another save from the dumpster of great vintage parts thanks to the good folks who cut these out and saved them. Smiles, MH |
